Matthew King Obituary

Matthew J. King Sr.
Matthew John King Sr., a lifelong resident of Jim Thorpe, passed away on Monday evening, Nov. 22, 2021, surrounded by family in the Lehigh Valley Hospital Center, Salisbury Township. He was the husband of the late Marcia King, who passed away in September 2015.
Born on April 23, 1944, he was a son of the late John King and Hannah (Tobin) Buttles.
He served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War from 1963-67 as a member of the UDT Beach Jumper Team 11.
Matt worked in the insurance and personal care services industries for most of his working life, most recently with United Security Assurance and Americare Services until retiring.
Wanting to continue to serve our great nation later in life, he enlisted in the Coast Guard Auxiliary and over his period of service was promoted several times to his present rank of Commander.
Matt was a Post Commander and member of American Legion Post 304, and a past Commander and member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8067.
He volunteered as an offertory collector at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Jim Thorpe, and also served as a member of the Fairview Hose Company, 40 & 8 Association, Lehighton Ambulance Association, Ancient Order of the Hibernians, U.S. Naval Academy Alumni Association, Knights of Columbus and many other organizations that he was actively engaged in during his lifetime.
Surviving are his two children, Matthew Jr., and his wife, Christine, in Maryland, and Marcia, wife of Michael Miller of Jim Thorpe; and five grandchildren, Hannah King, Marinn King. George Swartz, Michelle Miller and Megan Miller.
Service: Mass of Christian Burial 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 2, Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Jim Thorpe. Interment, parish cemetery, Jim Thorpe. Call 9-10 a.m. Thursday in the church.
