Andy Devine Obituary

Andy H. Devine

Andy H. Devine, 96, died Friday, November 16th, 2018

Lawyer, State Representative, County Commissioner, Community Organizer, City Councilman, Judge, child advocate, parent activist…a beloved son, brother, uncle, husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

He was born December 4th, 1921 in Shelby, Ohio and raised in a large family by strong, faith filled parents (Rose and Dennis Devine). He overcame many obstacles early in life. His father worked in a factory 12 hours a day, 7 days a week. His family was poor materially, but rich in faith and love. He had dyslexia and was held back 2 years in elementary school. He left his family home at the age of 16 to enroll in seminary, a life that was disciplined, formative, and character building. In his early 20's, he lost eyesight in his right eye from a detached retina. Despite his reading disability, he graduated from law school in 1948.

Andy: an Irishman, stubborn, charismatic, honest, innovative, charming, bull-headed, determined, dogged, passionate, funny, intelligent, faithful, a man of integrity. He fought fiercely for children and parents. (Always "think parent" when helping a child.) He loved history, opera, traveling, camping, hiking, swimming, politicking, his favorite water glass, and above all, his family.

He chose a strong, feisty woman, Lorene Hecker, to be his life partner. They celebrated their 65th anniversary on October 3rd. They raised six children: Patrick, Mimi, Jim, Paul, Laurie, and Jean; later Sophia Ross Lloyd joined the clan. The spouses or "outlaws" (in order) Cheryl (Armor) Devine, Mike Touhey, Kristine (Newbold) Devine, Sharon Mayne-Devine, Ed Jacob, Mark Spinazze and Mark Lloyd. Grandchildren: Kristina, Carolyn, Kerry, Kevin, Erin, Annie, John, Michelle, Paul, Teresa, Kathleen, Katherine, Anna, Henry, Nicole, Gayle, Julianna, Joe, Sarah. His 21 great grandchildren filled his heart with delight.

He was profoundly grateful to God for the gift of life and the gift of family.

Visitation will be held at the Coyle Funeral Home, 1770 S. Reynolds Rd., on Friday November 23rd. from 2-8 pm where a Scripture Service will be held at 7pm. Funeral services will held on Saturday November 24th.beginning at 10:30 am. in Our Lady, Queen of the Most Holy Rosary Cathedral, 2535 Collingwood Blvd.

Judge Devine was an inspiration to anyone who had the privilege of knowing him. He brought me into his "think parent" initiative and gave me a historical tutorial on all things Toledo. He will be missed by many. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

A humble giant; a life well lived.

Andy was the most creative, imaginative, courageous, innovative, inspiring, and demanding person - of himself and those who entered his world - one could ever know. He was a man of faith and deeply devout. He was kind and considerate. His passion was the improvement of parents and, as a result, the welfare of their children. He, Lorene and all of their children are testament to the validity of his passion. To his last breath he sought to make his passion universal. It was my privilege to work under his guidance for 12 year and to succeed him (no one could replace him) on the bench. Barbara and I grieve his death while we rejoice with the angels over his victory - a life well lived.

Andy was one of the most creative, imaginative, courageous, encouraging, and demanding persons one could ever know. He was kind and thoughtful, a man of deep faith and strong devotion. His passion for improving and encouraging parents, and therefore, the lives of children continued to the drawing of his last breath. He, Lorene and each of their children are testament to the validity of his passion. It was my privilege to work for him for twelve years and succeed him (no one could replace him) on the bench. Barbara and I grieve the loss of our friend and rejoice with the angles for his gifts and his giving.

When we adopted our first son, Judge Devine treated the hearing as a welcoming, a community celebration for our ebulant toddler, me and my husband, grandparents, other family and friends. I will be forever grateful for that. He an my mother also worked together to build justice in Toledo and beyond. As a pediatrician I have followed and worked with him promoting parents for many years. Thank you to his family for being his base of love and support and sharing him so fully with so many of us.

I had the privilege of working for Judge Devine in the 1980s as his secretary taking shorthand dictation and attempting to organize his unmanageable busy schedule which he always managed to fulfill. His booming voice and contagious laugh were music to my ears. He taught me more about life, family, religion, business sense and the law than any other. He was always supportive and encouraged me to seek more. It didn't take long to know who all his children were, and then grandchildren....and hear of their holidays together and how much he loved each and every one of them. He so loved his boss, Lorene :) who he had so much love and respect for. I remember when he was in his busy days of traveling around the country educating politicians and other courts about juvenile justice and community involvement, he was scheduled to fly out late morning one day and after last minute orders and phone calls, his brief case in hand, headed out the door and came right back in. He looked at me and said, "Where am I going?!" I said, "DTW to DC." Ohhhh, that laugh echoed in the hall as he headed out. I will always love him and miss him so.

Prayers to your family at this time. He was a great man who made a big difference in so many young lives, some of us never forgot it. He always was available to talk to you and he never talked down to you. He was and always will be a blessing. So sorry for your loss.

Andy and my Uncle Jack Corrigan went to law school together. My Grandmother always loved it when she ran into him; she would remind my mother, and her twin sister, that they "let him get away." The girls would blush (still into their 50's) and Andy would just laugh that wonderful laugh.
