My Grandmother Alice Spilker Hudson was your mother's cousin. I had Mrs. Heslup the last year she taught. She has been and will remain my favorite teacher. I have lived in Florida now for over 13 years. I have kept in contact with her since I graduated high school. She came to both my high school and college graduation parties, and it meant THE WORLD to me that she attended. She has touched so many peoples lives and she lives in all of our hearts.
We wrote letters to each other, and I would see her at the church rummage sale when I was home visiting. I was always greeted with her loving smile, the laugh I will never forget and a big hug.
I wrote to her up until she was moved into assisted living and got ill. Not only was she the last surviving link to my grandmother, she was the most loving, kind, and happy person I have known. I was devastated to hear she is gone. I just found out this morning, and it is with great sadness and tears I write this. She was always positive, and told me how proud she was of me and what I had achieved in my life. Those letters are among my prize possesions. Very few teachers would take the time to keep in touch with former students, she always made me feel special, and like I was her grand daughter. Which was the closest thing to having my grandmother since she has passed.
My thoughts and prayers are with you, she was loved and adored by many. She talked at length about her kids, and I feel like I know you all from the letters we wrote. She loved you all so very much.
The only comfort I can take is that she is in heaven with your father, both wonderful, gentle and kind souls. My heart breaks for you. My Deepest sympathies.

Aunt Betty, and all of you, are a treasured childhood memory that never seems to fade. I'll never use one of her recipes that I don't think of her, and smile! And I'll never forget Hickory Street and the fire flies! xox

My sincere condolences go out to the family for your loss. I had the good fortune of having Mrs. Heslup as my second grade teacher at Elm Street school in the early 70's. She was the kindest and most encouraging teacher that I encountered during my school years. She was such a special lady in so many ways. Her big beautiful smile, her warmth, her kindness and the constant encouragement she always offered, made such a difference in my life, and I'm certain it did in the lives of an untold others. Once you met and befriended this beautiful lady, you had a friend for life who truly cared for and about you. I was fortunate to be able to visit with Mrs. Heslup several times throughout the years, and every visit was a joy. I took my 4 children to visit her at the Kingston Home last year and they fell in love with her immediately. She lit up like a Christmas tree and started in right away asking the kids about school, quizzing them and offering encouragement. It is no wonder that so many loved this dear lady, she was so kind. Thank you for sharing this beautiful lady with us. Her memory will live on in our hearts forever, where she will continue to bless, inspire and encourage us.

Best wishes and sympathy to the Heslup Family. Your Mom was the greatest! She was not only beautiful on the outside but more beautiful on the inside. My first born son (Greg) had her in 2nd. grade and we truly loved her. I was active in her classroom and she was so very special. She will be sadly missed by so many and she touched so many lives. After 47 yrs. she always remembered my son's name. Thank you dear Betty and God Bless you all!

Scott, Shelly and John: Your mom was my mentor, friend and hero. I student taught with her in the Spring of 1970 (2nd grade) and I learned more from her in those weeks than in 4 years of college. I never forgot the way she treated children ("Never call them kids," she told me), how she was always smiling and positive and how she found good in every child. I went on to teach and be an administrator and retired in 2005 and I KNOW that she was with me every day of my career. Her professionalism and love of teaching influenced me more than I can express. May your mom rest in peace. I truly respected and loved her.

Heslup Family you must be proud to have had such a lovely lady be your parent. As a teacher she was always so thoughtful of the children getting to know them and teaching and sharing ongoingly. a now forty year old child of mine, who she would call by name, she would always ask about when I would see her at the grocery, walking or shopping. A smiler always. God bless you in peace and understanding.

Mrs Heslup was the kindest teacher I had. She was my 2nd grade teacher back in the 70's. I didnt know she passed away. I was looking for her on FB & saw the obit. As a child, my homelife was kind of scary at times because my dad drank & Mrs Heslup was someone I could depend on to offer an encouraging word or a smile with a twinkle in her eye. I'm 48 yrs old now & I will never forget her kindness.

You were the greatest teacher I ever had. I remember sitting in your classroom as if it were yesterday. I also remember all the times you stopped me on the street and said hello when I was grown. I hope I am as good of a teacher to my students as you were to me and I carry you in my heart every day I teach. I will forever remember you and share our memories of my third grade year with my third grade students. I know you will eternally live on in heaven and in my heart. Heslup Family, my condolences to you all. Whenever I would spend some time in Perrysburg I would meet her walking her dog and we would have a chat. We also met again at a Harbauer family gathering. What I enjoyed about Betty was her cheerfulness--it makes me happy to remember her. Her joy is eternal.

Shelly, I am so sad for your loss. Your home was always a great retreat for the kids of the old neighborhood. You always knew a game of horse was going on and you could stay until the street lights came on. She was a lovely lady. When Randy and I came back from California we joined the First Presbiterian Church and saw your parents often. Take care, she is up there with your dad, my dad and Mr. Larson. Pretty good company.

Hey Cousins. I am so sorry I can't fly in for the funeral (I have Herman's mom here). What great memories I have of your mom and living with you guys! I was glad I got to visit with Aunt Betty after June's funeral at Kingston. She kept telling me that Uncle Bob was coming home after he got off work and I believe he did spend the evenings with her so she wouldn't be alone! I will put the wonderful pics Kim found in the attic at 804 Sandusky St on this page so everyone can enjoy them!

My father, Chip Baker, built your parents' home in the 50's. When my daughter was born, I named her Shelly, after Bob and Betty's daughter since I thought it was such a lovely name. I share in your loss.

Scott, Shelly, and John; your mother was such a terrific lady whose smile would always make my day. I remember when I last saw your parents when I was on leave, and it was like I never left them. They are now together again, but their mark on this earth lives in all who encountered them!
