Charles Gradel Obituary

Charles "Tom" Gradel "Mr. G"

Charles T. Gradel, 80, grew up in east Toledo, Ohio passed away peacefully on November 26, 2021, in his Oregon, Ohio residence. Charles was born in Toledo, Ohio on December 22, 1940 to Norman and Josephine (Bamdeleon) Gradel, who preceded him in death along with his sister, Mary Marion. Surviving are his son, C.T Gradel; sister, Catherine Thompson; brother, John Gradel, Sr.

He was a graduate of Central Catholic High School and attended University of Toledo. Charles was the former owner of Mr. G's Ice Cream on Rt.2. Prior to starting his successful ice cream stores he was an operating engineer for Geo. Gradel Excavating for 22 years until 1984. Charles purchased land on the corner of Hill and McCord, cleared and leveled the land by himself and the help of some friends and built the Mr. G's Barn opening in the spring of 1988. "Mr.G. " as known to many, was a mentor who taught valuable life lessons, even though he could be opinionated; everyone knew it came from a good place and he was a great person. He was avid outdoorsman; enjoying hunting, fishing, and caring for the birds around his home. The true loves of Tom's life were his many dogs, Penny & Pady.

So sad to hear of his passing, I wish I could have visited with him once more. I met Tom at the YMCA and always enjoyed chatting with him and listening to his stories. He invited me and my boys to help him split wood once and meet his dogs, in which he loved so much. My kids had such a good time riding along with him while he showed us his woods, and then back to his barn to split wood and play with his dogs. He was such a joy and will be missed by many.

This one hurts.
I met Tom in 2013 when I transferred to the East Y. If time allowed we would talk up at the front desk before and after his workouts every time he came in. He would tell me all about his dogs and how he would make this sourdough bread with a starter that he had had for 30 some years. He always told me he would bring in some bread for me... I´m sure it would have been delicious. We would laugh talking about computers/technology because he was not tech savvy, in fact he still had a flip phone. He would ask about my kids, we would talk about music and until now I did not know he graduated from Central Catholic. #CCHS The last time I saw him was right before Covid hit, I didn´t know Alex was going to attend Central at that point but I´m sure we would´ve had some great conversations about his alma mater too.
RIP Tom. I will never forget you.

My deepest sympathies to his son, C.T., and his family. My first job was at Mr. G's working for Tom and Darlene! I was lucky enough to see Tom about 2 years ago when he came into my work to get his golf cart fixed. He was a wonderful boss and I have so many fond memories of him! RIP
