Charles Sprandel Obituary

Charles W. Sprandel

The family of Charles W. Sprandel sadly announces the passing of this wonderful man on March 5, 2021, in Sarasota, Florida. He was born in Olivet, Michigan, to Walter B. and Anna Marie (Yotter) Sprandel, in 1933. His father was a professor, coach and later Dean of Men at Albion College.

As a consequence, Charles was raised in two college towns, Olivet and Albion, MI until he entered the US Navy in 1953. He was trained as a medic and spent his time patching up many US Marines as well as shipmates. After his honorable discharge he entered Albion college, majored in history and graduated with a bachelor's degree. He went on to graduate school at the University of Michigan and earned a Master's degree and became a PhD. Candidate in Education. He accepted a position in the Education Department at the University of Toledo which necessitated a move to Toledo, OH. As a diehard Wolverine fan he was uncertain as to how much he would "fit in" in that regard. But much to his surprise and delight it turned out there were, and still are, many Wolverine fans present in the "border town" of Toledo.

Always an active sports enthusiast, he participated in road racing and ran in several marathons including the Glass City Marathon and the Boston Marathon. He moved to Maumee Valley Country Day School and while there wore many hats. He was an Instructor, Head of the Lower, Middle, and Upper Schools, Director of Admissions, and Director of Hob Haven summer camp. He retired as the Head of the high school in 2000.

Upon moving to Sarasota, FL he became involved in education again. He was an instructor at the Lifelong Learning Academy through Ringling College sharing his love of The Great Books Series. He led the class of adult learners from 2002 right up until his passing. All who knew him loved and respected him. He led a life well lived..........we all miss him beyond words.

Charles was the beloved husband of Alice Sprandel; loving father of Dawn (Jim) Sprandel Kaser of OH; and Kari (Glenn) Sprandel Coughlin of CA; stepfather to Michelle Helfer of MI, and Mike Remynse of WA. Grandchildren are Tyler (Rachel) and Alex Kaser, Robert and Ryan Coughlin, Maxim, Seth and Morgan Helfer; and great-grandchildren, Elle and Tyson Kaser. Siblings, Jon (Nancy) Sprandel of MI, David (Bette) Sprandel of NJ and Mary Ann (David) Ringer of TX. Charles was preceded in death by his parents; first spouse, Ann (Okada) Sprandel; and brother, Jon O. Sprandel.

Maumee Valley and the family of Charles W. Sprandel will be establishing a fund for those wishing to honor Charles. This fund will be dedicated to providing aid to struggling families whose children through testing and acceptance are admitted to attend Maumee Valley. Please contact Christopher Holinski, Director of Advancement at MVCDS, [email protected], (419)-381-1313 x110 for giving details.

What a wonderful man. I´m so happy that my own children got to meet him a few years ago in Sarasota. Many of my fondest childhood memories were shaped at Hob Haven under his leadership of camp songs and so much more. He and Ann set a tone and taught me so much, such examples. I´m very much a product of those years and so grateful. Heartfelt condolences.

Chuck, you were head of The Lower School when I knew you best. As Lower School teacher, I found you wise, kind and an inspiration to us all, teachers and students. Be at peace.

Mr. Sprandel was so instrumental in my desire for learning. I like to think I´m also one of the horns from his Thanksgiving song.

Chuck was both a colleague and a true friend of mine. Yes, he was as much a fan of the Michigan Wolverines as I am of the Fighting Irish. I had the privilege to attend a ND-MIch game with Chuck. I remember losing a bet to him and having to wear a Michigan hat and sing the fight song in the MVCDS courtyard. He was simply and truly a good man.

Mr. Sprandel was a great inspiration to me! He supported and encouraged my interest in Russia in 7th grade, and I went to get a PhD in Slavic Languages and Literatures. I have been teaching Russian language, literature, and culture for over 23 years. I am eternally grateful to him!
