Donald Rettig Obituary

RETTIG

Donald R. Sr.

Donald R. Rettig, Sr., pharmacist, died Monday at Hospice of Northwest Ohio in Perrysburg, Ohio. He was 81. He leaves behind his loving and devoted wife of 58 years, Susan (Treesh) Rettig; his sons, Donald Jr. (Barbara), Jonathan (Elizabeth), and David (Gretchen), and eight grandchildren.

He was born in Toledo in 1934 to Ralph and Helen Rettig and graduated from the University of Toledo College of Pharmacy. He served his country in the U.S. Army as a medic and pharmacist at Walter Reed Hospital and at Fort Meade. His time in Washington, D.C. with his new bride was one of his fondest memories.

The son of a pharmacist, Don was extremely proud of his profession and served four years as a board member of the Ohio State Board of Pharmacy. He was a staff pharmacist for Lane's Drug Stores and rose to the position of corporate director of professional programs for Lane's parent company, Peoples Drugs in Alexandria, VA. When he left Peoples to reduce travel and care for elderly parents, he became the director of pharmacy for Seaway Food Town and the Pharm.

Don was passionate about early American history, furniture and architecture. He loved gardening and spent many hours in his beloved hosta garden planting, weeding and admiring. He was a longtime member of Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church, where he served in a variety of roles including president of the congregation. He was preceded in death by his parents, and daughter, Rachel Gibson.

A celebration of Don's life will take place Friday, October 9, 2015, at 1:00 p.m. at Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church, 13101 Five Point Rd., Perrysburg, Ohio. The family will receive guests one hour prior to the service.

The family suggests tributes be made to Shepherd of the Valley or Hospice of Northwest Ohio. Arrangements entrusted to Peinert-Dunn Funeral Home, Waterville, OH. To leave an online memory, please visit

Many fond memories of working with Don as sales rep; as a pharmacist, buyer, and friend. God's comfort to all, yet must rejoice in his "homegoing".
