Donald N. 5/16/1919 - 8/25/2015



Don passed away on August 25, 2015, at Swan Creek Retirement Village.

In 1946, he married his Wooster College sweetheart, Mary Jeanne Weimer, who preceded him in death in 2004.

Surviving are his three children, Elizabeth Morrin (William Close), Philip (Linda) Ziemke, and John (Holly) Ziemke. He will be greatly missed by grandchildren, Robert Morrin III, Ron Morrin, Jennifer Ziemke, Laura (Corey) Burgermeister, David Ziemke, Ashleigh (Danny) Vuich, and Cassidy (Tarkan) Maner; his great-grandchildren, Julieann, Isabella, Robert IV, Ava, Ike, Taylor, Amelia, Drew, and Jackson; with great-great- granddaughter Vera Lynn. He is also survived by his brother Ed Ziemke of Vermilion, OH.

In addition to his parents, Don was preceded in death by brothers Al Ziemke, Jim Ziemke and sister Doris Ziemke.

Although he was born in Sandusky, OH to George and Marie Ziemke, Don was raised in Norwalk. He attended Wooster College and graduated from Ashland University. He received a master's degree in education from the University of Toledo and taught at Macomber High School. Later he became the Director of Trades and Industry for the Toledo Public Schools where he was employed for 38 years.

He entered the U.S. Army in 1943, served in Europe, and then passed through the Panama Canal to serve in the Pacific Area. He was discharged in 1946 and spent 34 years as a reservist with the 463rd Engineering Battalion at the University of Toledo, retiring as a full Colonel.

He was also a graduate of the U.S. Army Command & Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, KS and the Army Administration & Logistical College in Atlanta, GA.

He was a past Commander of Toledo Post #335 and was twice the Commander of The Military Officers Association of America. He was also a past member of Council at Hope Lutheran Church where he has been a member since 1948.

The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Swan Creek and Senior Independence Hospice for their loving care and support throughout Don's residency there.

There will be a memorial service in the Marsh Center at Swan Creek Retirement Village, 5916 Cresthaven Lane, Toledo, OH 43614 on Saturday, August 29, 2015, at 2 p.m. A private interment is planned for a later date in Ottawa Hills Memorial Park.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.

During the time Mr. Ziemke spent in independent living I discovered a kind, gracious, soulful man who was full of wisdom.
