Edward Blank Obituary

Edward Charles Blank

Edward Charles Blank, 71, died October 31, 2018 in Philadelphia of Lewy Body disease and Alzheimer's. The son of Joseph Blank and Olivia Beckman Blank, Ed was born and raised in Cincinnati. He played football at Purcell High School and was named to the All City team his senior year as an offensive end.

In 1969, he graduated from Ohio State, where he was an Evans Scholar, and then began a management career in the trucking industry. Also in 1969, Ed married Lynne Mangan of Toledo, whom he met on a blind date four years earlier. They moved from Toledo to Massachusetts in 1973, where their son Adam Blank and daughter Mallory Curran both were born.

Ed earned his MBA from Nichols College and subsequently returned to Toledo, where he established a trucking division for Guardian Industries, his employer of 20 years. In 1995, he and Lynne moved to downtown Chicago, where they thoroughly enjoyed city life for 17 years. Upon retirement, they relocated to Philadelphia and relished weekly trips to Brooklyn to visit their granddaughter Hope.

Ed also is survived by his brother, Charlie (Janet) Blank and sister, Kay Bao, both of Cincinnati; son-in-law, Keith Romer; honorary daughter, Birgit Brune Hermening; brothers- and sisters-in-law, Leigh Prebe (Ron), Janet Wiza (John), Patrick Mangan (Julie), Kim Mangan (Lisa Jacobs), Mike Mangan (Laurie), David Gaudette, and Shawn Mangan; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Ann ("Mim") Howard; brothers, Robert and Louis Blank; parents-in-law, Audrey and Thomas Mangan; and brother-in-law, Joseph Mangan.

A memorial gathering will be held in Toledo on Saturday, December 1. Ed would be happy if you cheer for Ohio State against Michigan this and every year, and if you would consider a donation to the Evans Scholars Foundation in his memory (evansscholars.org).

Lynn,
I am very sorry to hear about Ed's death. I grew up with Ed in Cincinnati. We both attended St. Cecilia's, Purcell and we were both Evans Scholars at OSU. In fact, I think I was on a blind date as well when Ed met you.

We had many, many great times kicking around as kids and then at OSU.

God Bless you and all your family. I would love to share more of my stories with you. I now live in Greenville, SC with my wife
Carole.

Hello, I am so sorry to learn of Ed's death. I was your babysitter in Dudley, Jennifer Reardon. Something triggered a happy memory of your family, and a bit of internet search led me to this sad news. Adam and Mallory, you were my first kids. Lynne, you and Ed created such a loving home, and always treated me so warmly. I'll be thinking of you during this difficult time.

Lynn, I am so sorry for the late response to Eddie's death. Like Ed, I was a St. Cecilia guy. I also caddied at Hyde Park Country Club, but I didn't remember that Ed had gotten the Evans Scholarship. If I am remembering properly, Eddie came to one of our St. Cecilia Reunions. I always considered Eddie one of the good guys. My wife and I send our condolences to you and your family.

To all the Blanks:
It's been quite a few years since I have had the chance to see any of you. This picture here of Ed reminds me of Pelham and the good times had there in that house for holiday gatherings with the entire Mangan family. I hope that your thoughts may be filled with all of the precious, joyful memories of life with him as you go through this time of transition now with his passing.

Love,
Paul
