Rev. Forest Trever Shumway

Forest Shumway Obituary

SHUMWAY Rev. Forest Trever Rev. Forest Trever Shumway, 84, of Holland, Ohio, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on March 18, 2009. Forest was born August 22, 1924 to the late Nathan Ray and L. Velma Shumway of Batavia, Michigan. Forest started woodworking as a teenager under the guidance of his father and won several 4-H awards in livestock, electrical, wood finishing demonstration and wood identification. He was named National 4-H Woodworking Champion at the age of 16. The following year he again won top honors and the bed he made (he and his brother made matching cherry beds) was sold and went on tour to incite interest in 4-H. It was then put on display in Washington D.C. in the 4-H Club Congress Building. Forest graduated from Bronson High School in 1943. He married his sweetheart, Erma Louise Haskell, on August 25, 1946. He graduated from Marion College in Marion, Indiana in 1950. He was ordained in the Wesleyan Methodist Church in 1952 and went on to pastor three churches in Michigan - Diamond Springs Wesleyan Church, New Haven Wesleyan Church and Rives Junction Wesleyan Church. When he retired from the ministry, Forest moved his family to Toledo, Ohio and worked for Houck Builders. In 1972, he started his own business, Kustom Krafters, and several family members worked with him through the years. When the business first started, he used his carpentry skills to remodel several homes and businesses, and then he became well known as a cabinet maker. He built custom cabinets, including kitchens, entertainment centers, molding and woodwork. He also specialized in clocks, making over 90 clocks for friends and family members. Each grandchild received a clock from Grandpa when they graduated from high school. Forest is survived by his wife of 62 years, Erma, and their nine children, David (Zaida) of Puerto Rico, Velma (Dan) Krumm of North Carolina, Merle (Amy) of Indiana, Melanie (Jim) Hall of Michigan, Gilbert (Denise) of Ohio, June Morehart of North Carolina, Christina (Lloyd) Henry of North Carolina, Paul (Gabriela) of Texas, and Carol (Dan) McCarty of Indiana. Forest leaves 21 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. His brother Glenn (Jean) of Maryland also survives. He was preceded in death by his parents, Nathan and Velma Shumway and son-in-law, James R. Morehart. Visitation will be Sunday, March 22 from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m at Reeb Funeral Home, 5712 N. Main, Sylvania, Ohio. A memorial service celebrating Forest's life and faith will be held Monday at 1 p.m. at Holland Free Methodist Church, 6605 Angola Road in Holland, Ohio. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the following charities which were near and dear to Forest's heart: The Gideons, Focus on the Family, or Tom and Karen Asher - medical missionaries in Africa. As a little girl, Mr. & Mrs. Shumway took my sister, Stephanie and I to church. I fear to think what life would have been like without the solid foundation in Jesus Christ that was afforded to us by their kindness and concern for our souls. I am sure Mr. Shumway is rejoicing in his new home in Heaven. Please let Mrs. Shumway know that our Mother, Margery Zapletal, passed away last February. She too, went to be with the Lord.

Dear Shumway Family,

So sorry to hear of the passing of Mr. Shumway but also glad that I did not miss it. I think of your family often especially since I drive past where the house used to be off of Monroe St a couple times a week. Your father and mother were such so instrumental to me in helping me to know the love and grace of Jesus Christ, a faith that my husband and I have worked to pass on to our own children. I know that in your sadness you also know the peace of his current home.

Love and Prayers to all of the Shumway family.

We were blessed to have the Shumway family walk with our family in our young christian life. There are many wonderful memories fondest of which would be Forest in front of the church leading the congregational hymns and directing the choir. He's safe in the arms of the One he knows so well, singing His praises, no doubt. Thank You Shumway family.
