Frank Stiles Obituary

Frank P. Stiles

August 23, 1938 - December 13, 2025

Frank P. Stiles, 87, of Monclova Township, Maumee, passed away peacefully on December 13, 2025 at Hospice Northwest Ohio. Frank, known to family and close friends as "Pat," was born August 23, 1938 to Eugene Sr. and Janie Stiles in Toledo, Ohio, the youngest of nine children. Frank graduated from Waite High School, where he participated in junior and varsity sports and was the city of Toledo novice division light-heavyweight Golden Gloves champion. Frank was drafted on October 2, 1961 by the U.S. Army during the Berlin Crisis and completed a two-year tour of duty in France.

Frank joined the Toledo Police Department on April 2, 1965, and after just two years became the youngest patrolman in seniority at the time to be transferred to the Detective Bureau. Surviving an incident with a robber's misfired gun thrust into his belly deepened Frank's resolve to serve the department and deepened his faith in God. Working in almost every section of the detective bureau, Frank assisted in thousands of investigations and arrests. He loved serving and protecting the citizens of Toledo and voluntarily worked countless hours of overtime. Frank was promoted to Sergeant in 1976 and was known as an excellent interrogator and investigator who would never give up on a case until it was solved. He enjoyed training other investigators in criminal interrogation. Frank was a highly decorated police officer, receiving several commendations, police officer of the year awards, and nominations for national awards. His career was dedicated to the belief that everyone has a right to live in a society free from fear and intrusion.

After serving twenty-five years, Frank retired from the Toledo Police Department on April 26, 1990 and was hired as the Loss Prevention Director for The Lion Stores. In January 1999, Frank went to work for the Lucas County Prosecuting Attorney's office as Chief Investigator, serving for eighteen years. He was also the author of three true crime books, which can be found in the Lucas County libraries.

Frank loved with all his heart his extraordinarily intelligent, beautiful, charming, professional, and community-adored wife, Billie Joanne "B.J." (Fisher/Smith) Stiles. They met while working for the Lion Stores. He said it was a loving and lasting relationship that every couple should experience. Frank was preceded in death by his wife, B.J.; his parents, Eugene Sr. and Janie; his brothers, Harmon, Jimmy, Eugene Jr., Bill, Jerry, and Edward; sister, Mary Emmagene Pierce; nephews, Jimmy, Jon, Frederick, Michael; nieces, Emme and Denise Noel; and his first wife, Pamela Stiles.

He is survived by his children, Kevin (Heather), Carey (Carolyn), Amy; and brother, Donald (Gisela); stepsisters, Janet Ocheske, Elaine Christian, Carol (Bob) Henny; stepdaughters, Angie (Jim) Eckstrom, Laurie (Kevin) Barbee, grandchildren Madeline, Mallory, Alex, Charles (Brittany), Jordin (Bryan), Melissa, Faith, Dylan, Nicholas, Sam, Ben, and Andrew; nephews, Dale (Joan), Bill, and Clifford Stiles; nieces, Debra Kiggins, Susan Fisher, and Janie Stiles, and his great-grandchildren, Adalynn, Audrina, Carson, Colton, Jaxon, Maci, and Ripley. In addition, Frank leaves behind his constant daily companion, Cecil the cat.

A private celebration of life service will be held for friends and family. Please consider making a memorial contribution to Hospice of Northwest Ohio. You may leave a condolence message at CoyleFuneralHome.com

I met Frank during my own law enforcement career.
He was a seasoned detailed investigator, a dedicated servant, and became a trusted confidant, loyal friend, and was much like an older brother.
He brought loyalty, professionalism, and justice to so many people and victims.
He served, lived, and acted always with honor, as well as his unique humor and personal tenacity.
So very sorry to learn of Frank's passing and our thoughts and deepest prayers go out to his family and loved ones.
He is sorely missed but remembered always.

I knew Frank from the detective bureau, when I was a patrolman. He was a nice man and a good detective. Several years after I retired, Frank approached me, and said he wanted to include the OIS, during a bank robbery stake out, that Harry "Slug" Marquis and I were involved in, in 1993, for his book "City Soldiers". He dedicated a short chapter to our incident in his book, and gave both of us a copy of the book, a very nice, and appreciated gesture on his part. Deepest sympathies to the Stiles Family on your loss!

I was an assistant county prosecutor from 1976 to 1980 in the criminal trial division and again between 2006 and 2016 in the appellate section. During my first stint I got to know Frank from his work as a homicide detective. Along with Frank, Toledo had some great cops in those days including Bumpy Baumgartner, Bob Poiry, Jim Carnes, Jim Lagger, Tom Ross, and many, many more. During my later time as a prosecutor Frank was an investigator for the Prosecutor“s Office with his office near mine. So, all said, I got to know Frank pretty well. He was one of the great, and he made Toledo a better and safer place.
