Franklin HANEY Obituary

HANEY Franklin D. (Giddo) Franklin D. Haney, 78, of Maumee, OH passed away on Friday morning, January 20, 2012. He was born on September 12, 1933 to Josephine and Michael Haney and grew up on Calumet Street in Toledo. Franklin was a 1951 graduate of DeVilbiss H.S., developing many friendships during this time period that lasted his entire life. After graduation, he attended Purdue University as an engineering student where he was a member of the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity. He served his country for two years in the U.S. Army. He traveled to southern California and married Marcia L. Waite of Toledo. Together, they raised their four children, Michael, Jodi, David, and Matthew in Maumee. A pioneer in the drapery manufacturing business, Franklin opened Custom Drapery. Franklin and Marcia Haney owned Windows, Walls and Wicker, an interior design and retail store in Maumee. Franklin also fulfilled a lifelong dream as owner of Sydney's, a restaurant and lounge in Sylvania. Most recently, Franklin worked for his son, Michael at MDH Sales as a controller and helped his son, David launch an Internet start up business (abebidz.com). Franklin and Marcia separated in 1979, but remained the closest of friends. Later, Franklin met Linda Mattoni. They continued their special friendship for the rest of his life. Franklin was an avid sports fan, enjoying both participating in sport and watching his children and grand children compete. Franklin was also an imaginative inventor with many patents pending. Of all his accomplishments, his role as grandfather (Giddo) was most cherished. He was preceded in death by Marcia and rejoined with his youngest son, Matthew, his sisters, Shirley and Jacqueline, and his parents, Josephine and Michael. Franklin is survived by his three children, Michael (Carolyn), Jodi Haney (Lisa), David; grandchildren, Kelsey, Matthew, Gabrielle, Michael, and Kiana, Timothy Carpenter (Bridgett), Jeremy Carpenter; brother, Michael Haney (Pam); sister, Fadwa Haney Skaff; nephew, George Skaff (Lori) and nieces, Cindy Skaff (Rob Fredrick) and Kathy Skaff. Visitation will take place on Monday January 23, 2012 at the Maison-Dardenne-Walker Funeral Home, 501 Conant St. in Maumee from 2-7 p.m. with a memorial service at 7 p.m. Friends and family are asked to Celebrate Franklin's Life thru Jazz at Degage on 301 River Rd. in Maumee, following the service. Frank and I were friends many years beginning at Nathan Hale and continuing through Devilbiss High School and for many years. I always liked Frank, so bright and inherently perceptive about people and events. We spent considerable time together in the 90's and early 2000's along with people like Sonny Smith, Hilton Murphy, Jack Kennedy and many others. Our sons David and Casey are the same age and were classmates together in Maumee schools. The last time I saw Frank was at "Rumours" restaurant on Monroe Street. He told us he had bought a car on e-bay. That sounded like Frank, always looking for a new adventure or a good deal. Jan and I talked with Frank quite awhile that last time we saw him. Frank was telling us something that was so interesting while it so well. Later Jan and I mentioned it to each other, how Frank was so sharp about many things. God bless, Frank. I will smile when I remember Frank and all the good times and memories we shared together through the years.
