Fred UHLMAN Obituary

UHLMAN Fred W. Jr. Fred W. Uhlman, Jr. was born to Fred and Grace Millikin Uhlman on May 13, 1919, in the family home at 307 West Wooster Street, Bowling Green, Ohio, and died on February 23, 2010, on Sanibel Island, Florida. He was a life long resident of Bowling Green. He graduated from Bowling Green High School in 1937, where he was a standout on the basketball and football teams. At Denison University, he joined Kappa Sigma fraternity and graduated in 1941, with a degree in economics. He joined the United States Coast Guard Service in 1942, and served until the end of the war. Fred married the love of his life, Elizabeth (Liz) Crawford, on July 6, 1949, and they enjoyed a wonderful 60 years of marriage. Together they raised their four children Jane, Bill, Betsy, and Jim. He began working for his father's business F. W. Uhlman & Co. in 1946, and continued there until 1960. He served as a member of the company's board of directors until the business was sold many years later. He also worked for the brokerage firm McDonald & Co., where he became a partner. He retired in 1977. Fred was a life long member of the First Presbyterian Church, where he was an elder, a high school Sunday school teacher, and a faithful servant of the Lord. He thought that Bowling Green was the greatest place to live, and over the course of many decades, he offered his time to the city in a variety of ways. Included in his service to the community were his years as a city councilman and a Wood County Hospital board member. In recognition of his longtime dedication to Bowling Green, he was named Philanthropist of the Year by the Bowling Green Community Foundation. Fred had many great friends and a terrific sense of humor. He thoroughly enjoyed hosting international students and maintained life long friendships with many, including Simon and Rose Njumba, Gene Jack and Jan Charoonruk, and Peter Sommerstein and his family. For Fred, spending time with family was always of the utmost importance. He loved exploring the world with his wife and taking his children, their spouses, and grandchildren on many vacations, including an annual trip to Sanibel Island. Fred is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Crawford Uhlman; children, Jane Maxfield, Bill Uhlman, Betsy Uhlman Brittan and Jim Uhlman and their spouses Sean Maxfield, Rachel Westlake, John Brittan and Susan Uhlman; 9 grandchildren, Annie, Mary Beth, Emmy, Sarah, Becca, JB, Grace, Andrew, and Jack; brother Robert Uhlman; brother-in-law Dr. Porter Crawford; and many nieces and nephews. Fred was preceded in death by his sister Virginia Uhlman Nader. There will be visitation at Dunn Funeral Home on Friday, February 26, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, 126 South Church Street, Bowling Green, Ohio, at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 27th. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a memorial contribution to the First Presbyterian Church of Bowling Green, Wood County Hospital, or Hope Hospice (9470 Healthpark Circle, Fort Myers, FL 33908). To Liz and the Uhlman family,
Just heard of your loss. It's a loss we feel deeply. We are in AZ and just heard of Fred's passing. We will miss him whenever we enter our BG church or think about our baseball chats. Shirley and I grew to love him. And, you, too. Liz. What a wonderful guy! What a wonderful couple!

So sorry to hear of your loss. I had hoped to come to Bowling Green this evening for visitation, but the weather is preventing that. You are all in my thoughts and prayers. I will always remember Fred's fabulous smile.

My thoughts and prayers are with the Uhlman family. I worked for
F.W.Uhlmans several years back and always enjoyed when Fred Jr.
would come to the office. I am sure he will be sadly missed.
