Glenn Dunbar Obituary

Glenn Dunbar of Swan Creek, at the young age of 91, died at Medical University Hospital. He was born March 28, 1914, in Delta, Ohio, to Roscoe and Florence Dunbar. He married Victoria Harlton in 1935 and went into business as a water well contractor in 1936. This small enterprise, along with Dunbar Drilling which he started with his brothers in 1946, led to Dunbar Brothers, Inc., formed in 1955. This company was eventually renamed Dunbar Mechanical, Inc. with Glenn as President/CEO.
In addition to these businesses, Glenn also started, Dunbar Manufacturing and Dunbar-Borton.
Glenn was well known in the industry for his ingenuity and skill. He held several patents and was instrumental in the development of the hydraulic crane. Many of the drills, pumps and tools used in the early years of their company, were built by Glenn and his brothers.
Despite the hard work and effort Glenn put into forming and running his various business enterprises, he still found time to work for his community. He became a member of the Delta Rotary Club in 1941 at the age of 27. He served as President of the Delta Club in 1944-45. In 1965, Glenn joined the Toledo Rotary Club and served as its President in 1973-74. In addition, he was District Governor of R.I. District 660 in 1971-72. He served on 7 committees for the Toledo Club and was awarded Rotary's highest honor, the Paul Harris Fellowship. He assisted in the initiation of the MESA (Medical Equipment & Supplies Abroad) Program in Guatemala. In his 65 years of Rotary membership, he maintained nearly perfect attendance. It is believed he only missed one meeting in that time, when he lost his left arm in a drilling accident in 1943.
Glenn served on the Delta Village Council, was a Board Member of the area YMCA, was President of the Toledo Small Business Association, and past Chairman of the Board of Blue Cross/Blue Shield. He was also active at Zion United Methodist Church where he was a member. He received numerous awards and recognition for his work in area service organizations.
He was a member of Valleywood Country Club and a long time member of the Toledo Country Club where he exercised his long time passion for golf as well as serving on the Board of Directors several years. An avid sailor at Burt Lake, MI and golfer, Glenn, AKA the "one arm bandit" made a hole-in-one at the age of 71 on the 17th hole. Glenn also enjoyed playing cards and regularly joined friends for bridge.
Glenn is survived by his wife of 70 years, Victoria Dunbar. He was preceded in death by his son, Harlton G. (Linda) Dunbar and brothers, Dale and Delbert. He is also survived by his sons, Lee (Carol), Steve (Karen), David (Laura) and Jeff (Jean); his daughter, Vicki (Max) Baney and sister, Amy Puehler. Glen and Tory have 16 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.
Friends may call at the Coyle Funeral Home, 1770 S. Reynolds, Toledo, on Friday, February 10th, from 5-8 p.m. and Saturday, February 11th, from 2-8 p.m. A Memorial Service will be held at Zion United Methodist Church on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. Interment will be private. The family requests that any memorials to Glenn go to the Toledo Rotary Foundation, Zion United Methodist Church or The Life Care Fund at Swan Creek Retirement Village.

We were startled to learn of Glenn's passing. We are in Costa Rica and will be unable to attend the services, however we will be there in spirit. We have so many wonderful memories of sailing, dining, Rotary, etc. that it is difficult to realize they won't be repeated. We will be in touch with Tory when we're back in the States.

What a wonderful man. I remember being a little boy palying golf with my Dad and Mr. Dunbar--I couldn't believe this one-armed man could hit a golf ball like that! Absolutely amazing! I knew then that anything was possible! Thank You Mr. Dunbar!

I will carry wonderful memories of Mr. Dunbar with me through life. My experience of this wonderful person was a man with a love of people and life, who wore a positive attiude with a smile. There wasn't a time Mr. Dunbar, our next store neighbor for many years, didn't greet me with a cheerful hello and big hug. What an incredible man. He will be greatly missed. God bless him and his family.

Glenn was a wonderful friend for many years and we will miss him greatly. We really appreciated his "stand in Dad" relationship with our son Brad. Glenn's strong attachment to Rotary was something we always shared. Our total sympathy goes to his whole family.
