Herb was my Dad for the longest time he never quit being my Dad even when I left his house. He has given me the greatest advice anyone can ask for, he was always there for me in anyway he could be. Mom I am sorry I wasnt around much I love you very much. I will always think of Herb as my Dad...

I remember my brother Herb as being a little devil. He climbed on the back of his tricycle at age 7, my younger brother Marvin doing the pedaling, and headed for the Maumee River. Eight or nine hours later they came home and wondered just what the fuss was all about. This was in the days when the whole neighborhood looked out for you. Everybody was scared to death, and here come these two little little kids, pedaling this tricycle down the street without a care in the world.
To say that my mom and dad were worried was an understatement. To say they got a little spanking was also an understatement. At least they never did it again.
I remember playing tennis with Herbie at Jermain Park, bowling with him at Auburn Lanes- all those things one would never think Herb could do - but he did them. And did them well.
Uncle Herb will always be remembered by my granddaughters Mary and Kelly as the "nicest uncle" they had. My sons remembered him for different things - each one has a "special"memory of Uncle Herb.Steve remembers Herbie taking him fishing - sitting for hours and talking. "He taught me how to be calm in stressful situations, and not to lose my temper. He also told me once that we were put on earth to help other people." With Ken he talked NASCAR and with Scott they talked work and Scott's girls. Gary knew he always had a place to stay with his uncle as did all the boys.Love is expressed in different ways by people just as memories of little children are different from those of adults. Mary and Kelly were never happier than when we were 'going out to UncleHerb's. "He always has candy," they'd say when they were younger and they loved sitting and talking to him, eating his candy and playing with his little dog, Beau..
Herb's grandchildren were always a source of happiness and comfort to him - he loved them, and bragged about them, all the time.
When I moved back from California 12 years ago after being away for 23 years, it was like I had been gone only ten minutes. Our love as a brother and sister was strong, very strong, and though we sometimes would go for months without seeing or hearing from one another, that bond we developed while growing up never weakened, or disappeared. When I was sitting with him close to the end, we talked and I held him and it was like we were kids again. A good, gentle man he was - a good gentle man he will always be. A life well-lived.It made you humble, looking at Herbie, who overcame so many obstacles in his life that it made us wonder just how we could complain and worry about the small things in our own lives. God speed my brother - I love you.

I would like to extend my condolences to you and your family. My heart goes out to you at this difficult time. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family Carole. The girls talked about Pappa all the time. I know the girls will keep his memory alive forever. I cannot say, I am sorry enough for your loss. I know how hard it is to lose someone so close to your heart is like.

Carole, Herb and you were the best foster home I was ever in. You two taught me more about life and love and family then any other home I lived in. Thank you for that. You and Herb are in my prayers always.
