Herral Long Obituary

LONG

Herral William

Herral William Long, age 84, died peacefully on June 14, 2014, at Hospice in Perrysburg. He was born on November 25, 1929, in Toledo to Ben and Edith (Rice) Long. Herral graduated from Libbey High School in 1948 and became interested in his lifelong passion for photography. He proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

Herral's career as a photographer with the Toledo Blade spanned six decades. He was prized for his artistry, his dedication to his craft, and preparedness for any newsworthy opportunity. Herral was awarded several honors from The Ohio News Photographers Association. His photos were a part of the Metropolitan Museum of Art exhibition that toured the United States and Canada.

He married Marcella Studer on October 30, 1971, and together they enjoyed 24 years until her death in 1995. During that time he wrote and recorded several songs in her memory, and played them for her on his autoharp.

A long time resident of the Old West End of Toledo, he opened his home to friends and fellow musicians for "jam sessions", known to last far into the night.

Herral is survived by his brothers, Ben and Doug Long, and sisters, Barbara Soliday and Lorna Leonard.

A celebration of Herral's life will be held on Saturday, August 9, 1:00-4:00 p.m. at the Toledo Public Library, Main branch in downtown Toledo, with a "Sharing of Memories" service at 3:00. Burial was private at Ottawa Hills Memorial Park. Coyle Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements. Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association of Northwest Ohio, the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library or Hospice of Northwest Ohio. Please view and share a memory of Herral at

For those of us here in Toledo's Old West End Herral was a gift. Not only did we love his amazing photography but also his enthusiasm for life and his generosity to this neighborhood he loved. One of my fondest memories was of Herral roller blading through the neighborhood. For me Herral was truly one amazing and special friend.

You introduced me to my passion; photography. You turned my fear and negativity into confidence and optimism. You put up with my chaos and I put up with your quirks. You changed my life in ways I could never tell you. I have missed you so much since moving to California. The missing you will continue as will the lessons you gave me. I have sold all my Nikons and traded in photography for painting. I will keep painting and you will keep shooting, Mr Long!

I knew the Long family from attending the same school as Herral Long's brother Doug. What a outstanding family! As I remember, Herral was always always the professional photographer capturing award winning images for The Toledo Blade. Truly an icon in the Toledo Community.
