A true gentleman and a spectacular photographer! I first met Mr. Long in, I think, 1965 or 1966 while attending Bedford Senior High School in Temperance, MI. Then, when I became active in community theatre in Toledo, I encountered him again. He invited me to his fabulous home which, I believe, was on Collingwood Avenue, one of those truly grand old homes in the Old West End. The Blade was, indeed, blessed with his genius. And, it was an honor to know him.

I had the wonderful opportunity to meet Mr. Long when the Blade did an article on my ministry on the Lake Erie Islands and he came to spend the weekend with me and shoot some pictures. I have always counted that one of my greatest encounters with a truly genuine gentlemen. I purchased the disc of music he did in honor of his wife! What a great tribute!

Herral Long was old school, a hard worker who didn't take any crap from authorities about his right to take pictures at a public property like Monroe County Airport after Ida plane crash. Part of a great crew of photogs at The Blade I'm proud to have known.

Rest in peace, Herral. Your life is a testament to originality, artistry, and integrity of spirit. A fine legacy, indeed. I'll never forget your smile every time I saw you in the newsroom, even if you were rushing on deadline. My deepest condolences to the family.

Many years ago, Herral, I, and others did a Halloween photo shoot in Woodlawn Cemetary and were asked to leave by police. He was a giving guy, who will be long remembered.
God Bless

I always loved working with Herral. Hated to ride with him, but loved when we were on an assignment together. I'll never forget him climbing to the top of the Wood County Courthouse tower, carrying 80 pounds of equipment, and doing so without hesitation.
You will be missed, my gentle friend.

I learned photography at Herral's side in 1971. He was a teacher, a friend and an inspiration. His photography was stellar, brilliant and amazing. I appreciate everything he did for my career. RIP Herral!

You were an inspiration to us young pups, and your hat (everyone knows which one) should be a collectors item. RIP, my cohort.

Harold sat beside me along with Paul Kiser and Harry Grell in the dining room at the "Lakes of Monclova" (an Assisted living facility on Monclova Road). He had resided there for the past year or so. He was a quit person but very pasionate about his time with The Blade. He still had much of his photo equipment and a scrap book of some of his photography. We will miss him very much and certainly grateful for having known him.---Harry Myers

Condolences to the Long family. Mr. Long took a photo of me back in the early 70's, walking with my hippie poncho blowing in the wind through downtown Toledo. Always wished I had that shot. He inspired me; I've been
creating photos ever since. He was a gem.
