Howard SAMPLE Obituary

SAMPLE Howard J. Howard J. Sample, 77, died Wednesday, June 13, 2012, unexpectedly at St. Mary's Hospital in Livonia, MI. He was born in Louisville, on August 3, 1934, but grew up in Detroit. Soon after graduating from the University of Detroit High School, he entered the U.S. Army and was stationed overseas in Tokyo for two years. Upon being honorably discharged, he then entered the University of Detroit, where he graduated with honors in 1959. His very successful 32-year career with Price Waterhouse commenced immediately upon his graduation, not to mention his engagement to his future wife, Ann Elizabeth Friday. After spending 12 years with the firm's Detroit office, he relocated to Toledo where he worked from 1971-79, becoming a tax partner during this time. He lived in Sylvania, was a member of St. Joseph's Church, and was also an active member of Sylvania Country Club, where he served as treasurer for four years. In October 1979, Howard and his family moved to New Canaan, CT where he continued his career in Price Waterhouse's Manhattan office for 12 additional years, retiring in 1991. He was a lifetime member of the American Institute of CPA's, and was also an active volunteer in New Canaan. He also volunteered in Naples, FL, which he and his wife, Ann, had made their principal residence while still maintaining their home in New Canaan. In October 2011, Howard lost his beloved wife of 52 years after she suffered a stroke, at 80. To say that he was dedicated to taking care of her during their final years together would be an understatement. He was also predeceased by his parents, as well as his sister, Ardell, in 2002. At the time of his death, Howard was in Northville, MI looking for a new home to spend some of his final years. He was looking forward to living near his brother, Bill, plus maintaining contact with the numerous relatives and friends that he still had in Michigan. Howard is survived by his brother and best friend, William Sample, of Northville; sons, Howard Steven of Toledo, Russell of Lancaster, PA, and Martin of Milford, NH, as well as several nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind numerous friends in Michigan, Connecticut, and Florida. His remains will be interred at Holy Sepulcher Cemetery, Southfield at a later date to be announced, with arrangements being made by McCabe Funeral Home, Farmington Hills, MI. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to the New Canaan, CT public library or to St. John's Jesuit High School, Toledo.

Howard was a good friend and a great partner. He and Anne made us feel very welcome when we moved to New Canaan in 1986! I really enjoyed the very early morning train rides into the city with Howard!! We will miss his cheerful personality.

Howard and Annie Sample were dear, dear friends of my parents, from their days in Toledo/Sylvania. Dad and Howard were good golfing buddies at Sylvania Country Club, and Mom, Annie, Howard and Dad would socialize constantly and go to dinner together 1-2 times a week. I knew them, as well, as real "salt of the earth" types; Howard's professional success didn't change either of them -- not one bit --and as a professional, I know how successful Howard became with PW.

I know Mom and Dad will miss them terribly; I just called Mom and Dad to tell them. Rest in peace, Howard. You already are missed.
