James Mack Obituary

James J. Mack III

October 27, 1949 - April 9, 2025

James "Jimmy" Mack III of Ottawa Hills passed away peacefully surrounded by family on April 9, 2025.

Celebrated in life for his thoughtful generosity, Jimmy was born on October 27, 1949, in Toledo, Ohio. He was the only son to James Mack Jr. and Mary (Bick) Mack. The eldest of six children, Jimmy graduated from Ottawa Hills High School in 1968 and attended the University of Toledo.

Jimmy was a voracious reader and loved motor sports. His passion for racing fueled his 44 years of service at Cummins Diesel, where he forged meaningful friendships through his integrity, sense of humor, and knowledge of engines. Over the years he maintained and repaired the cars of friends and family, especially his five sisters. His love of car racing began in high school with his own cars at Milan Dragway. Jimmy was co-owner and mechanic of a drag racing team that competed nationally. Later in life he followed the sprint car circuit. Most Sundays he was never too far away from the rolling thunder of NASCAR. He proudly supported Mud Hens baseball, UT football and basketball. He enjoyed walking the Toledo Metroparks and was a lover of dogs, especially German Shepherds.

Jimmy Mack is survived by his sisters, Mary Kay (James) Harris, JoEllen (James) Wells, Linda O'Dell, Maureen Alexander (fiancé John Peters), Margaret (Delano) Copprue; nieces and nephews, Susan Harris, Karen (Steve) Doust, Daniel (Lauren) Harris, Jacob O'Dell, Dustin (Debbie) O'Dell, Kate (John) Barone, Kristen Twining, Molly Wells; and eight grand-nieces and nephews. Beloved and missed by all he was the best son, brother, uncle, and friend.

Per Jimmy's wishes, his body was donated to the University of Toledo Medical College. A celebration of life is being planned for a later date. Donations may be made in his memory to the Historic Church of St. Patrick's Outreach, any animal rescue, or the Ancient Order of Hibernians.

The family would like to thank the staff at Kingston Care Center-Sylvania, Ohio; his home nurse Connie of Ohioans Home Health Care; Hospice of Northwest Ohio; and honorary sister, Libby Sorosiak, CNP, for their compassionate care.

I am so sorry to hear about Jim, I am sorry this is late in getting posted but I just now found out. I have so many fond memories of Jim, way to many to post here. We spent a lot of time walking our dogs together and he spent a lot of weekends with my husband going to sprint car races and hanging out at our house. Jim was always fun to be around, unfortunately we lost touch over the years as life gets busy but we stayed in touch a few times a year by phone. My heart is broken that I was unable to see him before his passing but my hubby and I will remember all the good times and fun we shared together. May the Lords grace be with him and his family. Rest in God's presence Jim.

We are deeply saddened by the passing of our dear friend and neighbor, Jimmy Mack. For over 40 years the gates between our homes swung open frequently leaving us with numerous memories. Jimmy could often be seen under the hood of a car, but would drop everything to lend a "helping hand" and share a funny story. He will surely be missed. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his loving family. With love always~Ann, David and Kimberly

I worked with Jimmy (and others here leaving memories and condolences) at Cummins in the 80's and 90's and spoke with Jimmy up through last year. He was a friend's friend. I've missed his daily company for years since I've moved from the Toledo area 25 years ago but he and I made it a point to pick up the phone from time to time to share our recent events. Jim had a sense of humor that was infectious, and a laugh that was genuine and loud in conversion, y'all know what I'm talking about that were in his world here in earth. But the Kingdom of Heaven has now gained another believer and I'll be glad to share some more with Jim when I get to the other side. Rest in peace brother...

I used to see Jim at the Green Derby restaurant, where we were both regular customers. I always enjoyed our visits. May he rest in peace.

I worked will Jim at Cummins Ohio back in the 90´s for a short time in the parts department. Jim was a book of knowledge on parts and engines, he had a funny sense of humor under pressure to multitask and would tell it like it is. RIP Jim

Jimmy and his Father were proud of their Irish heritage. Jimmy was a kind man and a great friend. When he found out that my daughter taught kindergartin, he would bring books to me that she could read to her class. I will have a Mass said for Jimmy at Historic St Patrick's church. God speed.

I worked with JIm at Cummins Diesel for 24 years. What a joy he added to everyone's work experience at Cummins. We traded life stories and travels for 24 years . He was a great worker for the company and a wonderful worker and fellow companion to be with as we all, at Cummins, went about our day. Jim was a great guy to know and I will remember him kindly as a great person to have shared part of my life with. Rest in Peace, Jim! Mark and Karen Cromly
