James Mackey Obituary

James B. Mackey

James B. Mackey, age 60, of Toledo, passed away on November 21, 2018 at Hospice of Northwest Ohio after a courageous two year battle with cancer. Jim was born October 13, 1958 in Toledo, grew up in Point Place and graduated from Macomber High School in 1976. Jim's adventurous spirit took him to Florida and the West Coast. Upon his return from California, he married his wife Kathy in 1988, celebrating thirty years of marriage and two sons. He took great pride in creating a strong family-centered environment and such would remain Jim's priority. He used his intelligence, mechanical aptitude and infectious personality to continue his career path in the electrical motor service industry to co-found Industrial Motor Services in 1995 which still successfully operates in Toledo today. Jim enjoyed fishing in Lake Erie and the lakes of Northern Michigan, but he especially enjoyed golfing with the fellas. An avid golfer, he participated in many golf trips that included Treetops Golf Resort, Myrtle Beach, St. Andrew's in Scotland and Pebble Beach in California. Jim was an avid auto enthusiast and car collector. He was known to auction cars at the Barrett-Jackson Auction in Scottsdale, AZ where he would enjoy having his son, Jimmy, participate. His fondest times were the many hours he spent at baseball fields supporting his son Joe or at tennis courts watching Jimmy.

Jim's greatest joy was being able to watch with great pride his sons graduating from college on the same weekend, Jimmy from The Ohio State University Moritz School of Law and Joe from Miami University, Ohio. Jim will also be remembered for his authentic, selfless, giving nature and his ability to relate to and have a conversation with anyone.

Left to cherish his memory is beloved wife, Kathleen (Tucker) Mackey; sons, James T. and Joseph Mackey; mother, Sharon Mackey; sisters, Christine Miller and Sherry Petit (Keith); his in-laws, Theodore (Becky), Robert (Jane), Michael (Julie), David (Deborah), Linda Moir (Mark); and Scott Tucker, and numerous nieces and nephews. Jim was preceded in death by his father, Bernard Mackey. A special thank you to Jessica and Jen for their dedicated and compassionate care.

The family will be celebrate Jim's life on Sunday, December 2, 2018 at Legacy Golf Club, 7677 U.S. 223, Ottawa Lake, MI, receiving guests from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., followed by a celebration memorial luncheon from 12:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the University of Michigan Cancer Center, 1500 E. Medical Center Dr., Ann Arbor, MI 48109 or Hospice of Northwest Ohio, 30000 E. River Road, Perrysburg, OH 43551.

My friendship with Jim dates back over 40 years. I was fortunate to be part of his foursome that went golfing in the spring to Gaylord MI and in the fall to Myrtle Beach. We did this every year for close to thirty years. Golfing up north also included a couple trips to the casino where the four of us would belly up to the cheapest blackjack table we could find. Myrtle Beach would always include a couple trips to the all you could eat "calabash" where Jim would slowly and methodically eat 2 plates full of crab legs....that was his appetizer! Through all Jim's physical challenges he was able to make the golf trip up north last spring. We golfed, played blackjack and had a few beers at the bar just like old times. Spending this much time together you learn a lot about a person. One thing I learned about Jim was through all his self-made success he was one of the humblest persons I've ever met. He was by far the most mechanically inclined person I've ever met. He could tear an engine apart and reassemble with his eyes closed. His "street sense" was off the charts, he could get about anything done. Kathy, Jim and Joe were by far the center of his life. They were always at the top of the conversation when we were together. Jim, my friend, you have given me so many great memories over the years that I will forever hang on to......thank you. Kathy, my thoughts and prayers are with you, Jim and Joe.
