James W. Scheib

James W. Scheib, affectionately called "Dutch" by his loved ones, was called home on April 14, 2024, leaving a legacy of love, generosity, and community service. Jim was born January 18, 1936, in Indianapolis, Indiana and was the oldest of three children born to Burton Van Dyke Scheib, M.D. and Helen L. Scheib. From an early age, he was instilled with a work ethic by his father, fondly known as "Doc Schieb," a principle that guided him throughout his life.

A proud graduate of Scott High School, class of 1954, Jim embodied the school spirit with his favorite mantra, "Once a Bulldog, always a Bulldog!" He excelled in academics and sports, particularly cross country, track, and football. He also played the saxophone in the marching band. In subsequent years, he added playing football to his accolades as well as becoming a member of the Alchemist Club and was selected as a Junior Rotarian of the Toledo Rotary. In recent years, he remained involved with his alma mater, raising funds for a student from Scott to attend the University of Toledo. Jim was inducted into the Jesup W. Scott Hall of Fame in 2018.

Jim graduated from the University of Toledo with a Bachelor of Business Administration in January of 1959. As a member of the ROTC he was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in 1959 and served in active Army Reserves for eight years, promoted to Captain and released from active reserve duty in 1967. He remained an enthusiastic supporter of the U.T. Rockets and was honored as Outstanding Alumni of the Year in 2008 and also received the U.T. Blue T Award. Jim was a member of the UTAA Board, co-chair of the U.T. Foundation Development Committee and a member of the UTMC Advisory Board. He also enjoyed attending Downtown Coaches Club.

Professionally he cherished his role of "helping individuals reach financial independence." He was a partner in the financial service firm of Scheib, Snow and Company for 43 years. His expertise and commitment to excellence were evident in his membership as a Life and Qualifying member of the Million Dollar Round Table for over 50 years. Jim held leadership positions in various professional organizations. Jim often said that, "I would rather be a giver than a getter" and believed in giving back to his community. He established scholarships and funds including the Sue A. Scheib UT Women's Basketball Scholarship, UTMC Mary Helen Darah Cancer Research Fund, the Sue A. Scheib Window on Wildlife at Oak Openings Metropark, and scholarships for Sylvania students through the Lions Club of Sylvania. He hoped he could be an example for others to experience the joy of giving.

Jim was an avid tennis player and former past Vice President of the Toledo Tennis Club. He enjoyed relaxing, as much as this go-getter could, at the family condo in St. Augustine. He also, by duress from his cherished wife, spent summers at their remote retreat in northern Ontario. It is here that he truly relaxed, yet kept his daily ritual of paddling by the neighbor's docks in his bright red kayak to get reports on the happenings around the lake.

Jim will be joyfully reunited with his beloved wife of 62 years, Sue, and without a doubt, will be watching for loons, playing a game of Five Crowns while splitting a Canadian Molson and cuddling with dog, Bob. Jim will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by his son, Jim Schieb Jr. (Rheta); and their five children, Austin Scheib (Tiffany), Colby Scheib, Kevin McFee, Kathryn Bowers (Patrick) and Corbin Scheib; his daughter, Mary Helen Darah; and her three children, Lauren Cassavar (David), Helena and Maria Darah (Denzel Wheaton); brother, Tom Scheib (Margie Housey) of Louisiana; five great-grandchildren, family, friends and all who knew him.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks you to consider honoring him with a gift to the Metroparks of Greater Toledo, the Sylvania Rotary Foundation or the Sylvania Lions Club Jim Scheib Scholarship fund.

A visitation will be held on Friday, May 17, at Epworth United Methodist Church from 9:30 a.m.-11 a.m. followed by a Life Celebration service beginning at 11 a.m. in the church. Urbanski Funeral Home a Life Celebration Home, 5055 Secor Road, Toledo, OH, is assisting the family.
