Jay Dubendorfer Obituary

DUBENDORFER Jay Jay Dubendorfer, 59, of Toledo, OH, passed away at home, Thursday January 15, 2009. Jay fought the invasion of cancer with a profound spirit of perseverance and strength. Even though we knew he was sick, his endurance made us think he would live forever. Jay was a dedicated employee of the Washington Local Schools for more than 38 years. He had a passion for, and spent a large part of his life coaching sports. Whether it was the teams his children played on, Jefferson Junior High School football, or as coach of the Woodward Polar Bear football team, Jay earned the respect of all who knew and worked with him. He adored his family and was immensely proud of his children. Jay is survived by his wife of more than 27 years, Sue, whom he married August 7, 1981; sons, Chad and Clay; daughter, Cori, and brothers Ken (Kim), Don (Bonnie) and Todd Dubendorfer; in-laws, Joan and Robert Jennewine and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth and Ev (McKiddie) Dubendorfer. Friends may call at the Reeb Funeral Home, 5712 N. Main St., Sylvania, OH, Saturday, January 24, 2009, from 11 a.m. until the Funeral Ceremony begins at 12:30 p.m. Jay's family would like to extend their many thanks and gratitude to the Hospice of Northwest Ohio, for their help, guidance, and compassion. Those wishing to give memorials, in lieu of flowers, are asked to consider the Hospice of Northwest Ohio, the Whitmer Athletic Boosters, or the Woodward Polar Bears 200. Those wishing to share a memory of Jay, or offer a condolence to his family, are encouraged to do so at: www.reebfuneralhome.com

Dear Sue and family,
I was so shocked to read of Jay's passing. I worked with him at WLS warehouse for many years and enjoyed many laughs and good times. I still remember how happy and excited he was on the birth of each of your children. He came to work and shared all his funny little stories as they were growing up. Our extreme sympathy to you and your family. I used to see Jay and his brothers more often when I lived in Toledo. Since moving to Florida, we have lost touch. I remember Jay playing Little League football and he was an excellent runner. My sister has kept me up to date about Jay's illness. I only regret that I didn't get to see him. You are in our thoughts and prayers.

To the Dubendorfer Family - My memories of Jay go back to when he first came to Washington Local in 1970. He was always helpful with my requisitions and provided advice as to what might work best in a specific situation. And most of all his presence at our football meetings, clinics, scouting trips and parties. Jay always took the time and gave his best effort to help the program reach its full potential. (at present in St Marys, GA)

All,

I played footvall at Wernerts with Jay and his brothers and I am honored to learn that Jay carried on the tradition as a coach much like his father. The Dubendorfers were fierce competitors on the field yet they took me the less talented one under their wings and did their best to mentor me a long. I can still remember getting blocked by one of the brothers and having my legs cut off from under me. Love and peace be with you all.

Dear Sue and Family,
Gene and I are sending our deepest sympathies to you at this time. We both enjoyed and deeply cared for Jay. I first met him when I started teaching at Jefferson and he worked in the warehouse. He also was a favorite of our son "Jay" because he would let him help with the boxes, etc.. Gene, of course, worked with Jay while they were in the Maintenance Dept. He was well thought of by everyone that worked with him and knew him. Also, as you probably remember, Gene played for your wedding reception. How fortunate we all were to have had the priviledge of knowing Jay. Because of him our lives were richer and definately more pleasant. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Sue, Chad, Cori, and Clay,
I was so deeply saddened to hear of Jay's passing. He was a great man, so brave, and so strong. I still remember him being around for all our junior high basketball games Cori, and later for such things as dinner at your house before senior year Homecoming. I know there are no words to heal the wounds, or give you true comfort, as I just experienced the loss of my father in August. As much as we don't want to suffer the loss someone so significant in our lives, we also take comfort in knowing that they are better now, pain free, and safe in the arms of our Lord. Your family is in my every thought and prayer.

Mrs Dubendorfer - you may not remember me, but I attended Jackman Elementary when it was the talk of the school that Miss. Jennewine was getting married. When I attended Whitmer, I "co-oped" at the WLS Warehouse where I met Jay and then later on the football fields of Jackman where my son played. He was one of the nicest men I ever knew - always with a kind word and a smile. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Sue, I am so sorry for you and you family's loss. Jay was such a wonderful person and I feel blessed to have known for most of my life. He was a wonderful football coach and more than that he was a friend to the boys. They all loved him. Though life sometimes takes you away from the people you love, be consoled in the fact that you will again one day be reunited in Heaven. My sincere condolences to you and your family.

Dear Sue, We were so saddened to hear about Jay. He was one of "our special kids" and was such a team player and so loyal. We are thanful that we were able to talk with him when we came to our grandson's game at Woodward/vs Toledo Christian. In fact, we talked so long that he missed his ride! We knew the family a long time since Ev babysat for Brooke & Brett when there were teacher's meetings. He was so proud of you kids and spoke of the kindness and caring you showed for him. We will miss him. God Bless. Love, Connie & Coach Marty Brumbaugh

January 21, 2009

Dear Sue, Marty and I send our love to you all. Jay was "our kid" who was always a team player and a loyal friend forever. He was so proud of the accomplishments of his children and cherished the love they showed to him. His Mom was Brooke and Brett's babysitter when their Mom had teacher's meeting, so we have known Jay longer than "most of our kids". How lucky we were to have had the chance to talk to him last football season at Woodward after our grandson's game there with Toledo Christian. Jay's goodness will remain with all of us forever. God Bless, Connie & Marty Brumbaugh

To the Dubendorfer family,
The Ritzenthaler family was very saddened by the loss of Jay. As we just lost our Papa (Jack) back in September from cancer, we understand what an emotional rollercoaster you all have gone through. Papa & Jay actually went through some chemo treatments together and boy did we love to hear the stories when Papa got home! As he (papa) was very saddened that he had to go knowing what Jay was going through also, the companionship was tremendous at such a devistating time during treatment. Once again they are sharing the stories from the old days of friendship with Ken & Ev, the Dube & Ritz kids growing up, and how cancer got the best of both of them. They were both fighters to the end with their sense of humor, of course!
RIP Jay
Love,
