Dear Mary and family,
I am so sad that Jim has passed away. When I heard that Jim had cancer, I just wanted to board a plane to see him. He wrote a very optimistic and realistic letter about his treatment. I thought and hoped he would recover. I did not get on to a plane.
I have had wonderful times with Jim and these moments I will always remember and cherish. I have stayed as an exchange student at Mary and Jims house. I enjoyed Jims calmness and humor and I always felt I was welcomed. I enjoyed seeing what he was painting in his studio and his talks about life. I even rode on his motorbike, which is something I only did because he could handle my fear of an accident.
I have also visited with my kids and asked Jim to do a portrait of them, which luckily, he obliged. These drawings have great sentimental value for me. These drawings are now framed. I love looking at these portraits and they remind me of Jim.
During my last visit 2 years ago, I asked if he had a painting from his hand from the Maumee area which I could have. Jim found one that could fit into my suitcase and we went to the place depicted. Just such a satisfying and joyful experience. I will miss Jim so much in his lovely homemade house, his warm-hearted, helpful and reassuring personality. I am so thankful for my time with Jim.
My deepest sympathy with Mary and family

Mary, Chip (Kevin) and family - So sad to hear of Jim's passing, but with it came back many great memories. Most of those are of mellow 'Mr. White' taking Chip and me to Pokagon State Park in the winter, where Chip and I would spend the day damming streams, climbing the toboggan run tower and getting into general mischief...all the while Jim stayed in the camper (it was winter after all), reading and letting us go about our business. Also, the cool sports car in the garage, the series of Mazda RX vehicles, taking Chip and me to (at least my) first R rated movie (Death Wish - Charles Bronson) at the drive in, and the smell of WD40 or any other industrial lubricant, in the garage. You will be missed, Mr. White.

My deepest condolences to your family during this most difficult time. There are no words that can ease the pain of losing someone so beloved. May you find comfort and peace in knowing that your loved one is in God's memory, because those who passed on our precious in his eyes. (Psalms 116:15) Please take care.
