Bonnie & Family,
So sorry to learn of the passing of John. I remember the old days of swim team, scouts and basketball with the children. John was truly a family man and good neighbor. He will be missed.

Maybe it is true that the good die young and John's passing is sadly proof of that adage. Over the many years that we were friends, beginning at Friendly Center in our youth, he was always a special person with a sense of loyalty and kindness found in only very few people. He will be missed by his family and others who knew him well. Rest In Peace Hawk.

My Girl Scout Family got to meet John and his family. Our kids attended Frank Elementary together. Later we met and talked while at the YMCA therapy pool. He always talked about his wonderful family. He will be greatly missed.

He was my seventh grade history teacher and my mentor when I first was hired in Perrysburg, and John became a good friend during our 25+ years as colleagues. He had the perfect mentality for junior high kids and he was patient, kind, and had just the right amount of standards. He had the foresight to see when enough was enough and then practiced his new trade of grandparenting with enthusiasm rarely seen even in the best. Every time I saw John after he became a grandpa he shared stories with an unrelenting sparkle in his eye and an excitement befitting a love like no other. He loved to talk about his kids of course too, and I was forever getting updates from him about all their accolades. Through it all you knew Bonnie was the glue that held it all together, and if he was like most guys he probably didn't say it enough to her, but he always let us know.
A friend of mine who is also a teacher asked me a while ago to send her a yearbook photo of Hodak (as he was known to many) so she could share with her class the man that she was always telling stories about. He had an effect on so many young people over the years, and I'm sure his spirit will continue to send ripples through the future. And somewhere out there is a very famous Constitution shirt.
John worked hard his whole life to put away for the future. Not only was he a teacher but he could be seen spending is summers working for Bower's Paving and he coached basketball for many years, as well as track and probably some other sports too. He would take extra work supplementals like Friday Night School and Saturday School, which nobody really liked, but he was a provider. He scrimped and saved and did a great job raising a family.
While I'm sure he would regret not having more time to take advantage of all for which he worked so hardthere is something to be said for going out on top. And if you looked John in the eyes these last few years and listened to him share stories of those kids and the familyyou at least will understand that he was at the top of game.
I wish I could give him a Viking send off, but I don't think that's allowed anymorebut I hope he and Kunkel save me a place at that great teachers lounge in the sky. You will be missed my friend.
