John HUBAY Obituary

HUBAY John P. Gone from our sight but never from our hearts. John died at Waterford Commons on Thursday, July 15, 2010, ten years after he was critically injured in a motor vehicle accident. John was born April 6, 1937, to Irene and Jack Hubay at Riverside Hospital. He grew up in the Birmingham neighborhood, attended St. Stephens's elementary parochial school, and graduated from Macomber Vocational High School. He then went to work at Libbey Owens Ford Glass Co. (Pilkington) where he stayed for 35 years, with one interruption, serving in the U.S. Army 1961-63. Following his retirement in 1991, he worked part-time as groundskeeper and maintenance man at St. Ursula Academy and the Ursuline Convent. John and his first wife, Carole Suzor, had a son, Michael and daughter, Michelle. They survive, along with Michelle's (Mike Downard) daughters, Heather and Rachel and Michael's (Christine) sons, Zackery and Zane. Great-grandchildren are Skilar, Braden, Kara, Jace and Hunter. Prior to the year of the accident, John was an active man, passionate about fishing, boating, hunting and camping. He was a member of Harbor View Yacht Club. John and his second wife, Jeanne (Nee Phillips), enjoyed a wonderful partnership for over 27 years. For Jeanne's daughters, Laura Mayberry and Elizabeth Block, John filled a father role for them as their father (Charles Kolbe) died while they were in grade school. Laura's daughters, Paige and Piper, and Elizabeth's sons, Jesse and Jeremy survive. Also surviving are John's sisters, Pat and Rose Hubay. They were regular visitors at Waterford Commons. During the five and half years that Jeanne cared for John at home, he enjoyed attending the respite care program (Paul's Peers) at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Maumee, directed by Deb Graham. Dave Watts was John's main caregiver there; he and John developed a relationship that provided them a lot of enjoyment. A debt of gratitude is felt for all the staff and volunteers who make life better for so many. A memorial service will take place at a future date not yet determined. For those wishing to make a monetary tribute in John's memory, please consider the Respite Care program at St. Paul's or Hospice of Northwest Ohio. Arrangements entrusted to the Reeb Funeral Home, Sylvania. Online condolences may be offered to the family at [email protected]

I could not understand why he would deliberately eat so slowly when he came to visit us in Florida. Finally realizing he enjoyed savoring every morsel of food he placed in his mouth. You will be missed. also..thanks for repairing my footstool I made in high school.

Remember the "rock fish"? Just one of the many fond memories we have of our friendship with John. Such a legacy he left to be enjoyed by those who knew him.
May God bless you, Jeanne and the family as you begin another chapter of life with your "angel" watching over you.
PEACE..........
