John Knitz Obituary

John Michael Knitz

John Michael Knitz, 82, of Traverse City, passed away unexpectedly on December 2, 2024. John was born on July 12, 1942, in Toledo, OH, to the late Melvin and Lillian (Styer) Knitz. On June 13, 1969, he married Ruth Ann Kaufman. They shared 55 years of companionship and memories.

John was a meticulous concrete mason his entire career, and was a proud 50 year member of the Operative Plasterers' & Cement Masons' Union. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, and always had a dog by his side. He was honest as the day is long, and always proud of a hard days' work. His quick wit, funny stories, and sense of humor were always close at hand, with a tough exterior covering his heart of gold.

John is survived by his beloved wife, Ruth; "adopted family," Jeff, Janette, Kaleb, and Jakob Kehl; many loving family members and life long friends; Bob Walters and Ron Clous; and many dear friends in the Lake Leelanau area and the U.P.

He was preceded in death by his parents; in-laws; and dog daughter, Molly.

In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place, and a celebration of his life will be held in the spring.
