John Mason Obituary
July 3, 1939 - July 22, 2025
John Mason, 86, of Maumee, Ohio, passed away peacefully on July 22, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Toledo, Ohio, to Leonard Sr. and Emily Mason. John served with the Toledo Police Department for 24 years, rising to the rank of Police Chief in 1980. He held that position until his retirement in 1987.
John is survived by his loving wife, Patricia; children, Shari, Jeff (Becky), and Kristi (Mike Sarns); grandchildren, Renee Lewis, Joshua Schwind, and Stephanie Saunders; and eight great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers, Leonard Jr. and Kenneth. John was preceded in death by his infant son; parents; and six siblings.
Friends and family are invited to visit at Coyle Funeral Home, 1770 S. Reynolds Rd, on Sunday, July 27, 2025, from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, July 28, 2025, at St. Patrick of Heatherdowns Catholic Church, 4201 Heatherdowns Blvd, Toledo, Ohio, at 11:00 a.m. The family will greet guests from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., prior to the Mass. My deepest sympathies to the Mason family concerning the passing of John. It was my privilege to have served on his administration staff . John was the person who convinced me to apply for the position of Chief of Police and was the first person to call me when I was selected. During my tenure John was always willing to give me solid direction when needed. In my opinion Chief John Mason was the best leader the department has ever experienced. I hope I was half the Chief he was.
