Joseph LOEFFLER Obituary

LOEFFLER Joseph "Joe" Harold Joseph "Joe" Harold Loeffler, 49, of Sylvania, Ohio, passed away peacefully with his family at his side after a courageous battle with cancer on Sunday, January 30, 2011. Joe was born on March 8, 1961 in Montpelier, Ohio to Harold (deceased) and Mary Loeffler. He graduated from Otsego High School in 1978. He earned a Bachelor's of Arts Degree from the University of Toledo in 1984 and his Juris Doctorate from the University of Toledo, College of Law in 1987. After a brief period working for a local law firm, his passion for social justice lead him to service as a Public Defender for Toledo Municipal Court, where he earlier served as an intern as a law student. Joe spent the majority of his career in this role. He also took great pride in serving as a mentor for numerous interns and personally took many under his wing. Joe's goals were never about money but instead "justice for all." With both his love of travel and his interest in international trade he traveled extensively to places such as China, Singapore, multiple trips to Europe, Jamaica, Mexico, and all over the United States. He was politically active with the Democratic Party and involved in several local and national elections. He felt strongly that all deserve legal representation and a voice. He took seriously his role in representing the underserved, the unjustly accused, and those whose due process of law was denied. He had a great love of the outdoors enjoying fishing, skiing and boating on the Maumee River and Lake Erie and snow skiing out West. Joe had a love of life that can not be expressed in words. He married the love of his life and best friend, Gayle Ashbridge on October 13, 1995. They shared a special love that sustained them through every challenge they faced. He is survived by not only his loving wife Gayle, but also his mother, Mary Loeffler; his sisters, Molly (Doug) Scott, Laurie (Tom) Ryan, and brother, John (Sarah) Loeffler. He leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews; mother-in-law Patricia Ashbridge; sisters-in-law, Tami and Lori Ashbridge, as well as countless friends. Tributes can be made to Project Iam, 3818 Frampton, Toledo, Ohio 43614 (An organization for Autism) or to Hospice of Northwest Ohio, 30000 East River Rd, Perrysburg, OH 43551. Memorial Services will be held at Reeb Funeral Home, 5712 N. Main St. Sylvania, OH, Saturday February 5th at 3:00 p.m., where family and friends are invited to gather one hour prior. Following the service, per Joe's request friends and family are welcome to adjourn to the Bier Stube, 5333 Monroe Street, Toledo, Ohio. I am so sad that Joe is gone. Our paths crossed many years ago. He always made me nuts with his honost and sometimes brutal opinions- but I always knew they were sincere. . I will go to bed tonight believing that he is up in heaven- sitting at The Ottawa Tavern in the sky having a drink with Justin....One of the last conversations I had with him was focused around his love for his wife Gayle- wow- he adored you. I am so sorry for your loss. He was a good guy. Again- I am so sad.

To the family of Joe,

Know that he will be missed by many of us attorneys and others in the community. He was always available even after I had finished interning with the Public Defender's Office to give advice, and a helpful word. He never had anything to say that wasn't positive. I will miss asking him how he is, only to hear the reply "Living the dream..." My deepest condolences and sympathies.

We remember you, Joe, as our defender for custody of a special little guy, Harrison. Through the years he has grown tall, strong, and learning the law and the right by way of Boy Scouts, Harrison's love, and the protection of God. "Mr. Loeffler, you were a huge supporter of my Boy Scout Popcorn Sales. I thank you and appreciate you.
Dearest Loeffler Family, May our prayers surround you like the wing of God to give you peace, now and in the future, for now there are no more trials, struggles, or illness, just the presence of God's Love to hold you.

Working with Joe in the Public Defenders office was a wonderful experience for me. Joe was a wonderful, stand-up kind of guy! Anyone at anytime could go to Joe for advice or even to just talk, he was always there. His sense of humor was amazing! He definitely had a heart of gold, and really was in the corner of all the people who wouldn't have stood a chance in the justice system without someone like Joe. Thanks for everything, you were greatly apprecitated and will be greatly missed!

Dear Loeffler Family:

As a classmate during law school, I have very fond memories of Joe. He was an extremely thoughtful person, maintaining it always during a 3 year experience where inherently one is surrounded by sharks e.g. other law students. I recall his finely attuned political instincts. It was Joe, in 1990, upon my return from Bxlles, who had his "bets" on an unknown guy named "Bill" from Arkansas. Joe is a person not easily dismissed and will be remembered by many very fondly.

The summer following my first year of law school, I couldn't find a legal job anywhere. Joe happened to be at Ciao one night that summer and the bartender was a good friend of friend of mine and knew Joe as well. They got to talking and next thing I know my friend calls and tells me Joe can give me a job as an intern with the Public Defender's office. Sure enough, Joe hired me that following Monday. I spent the next 4 years working for and learning from Joe in Toledo Municipal Court Public Defender's office. As you can imagine, that is one trying job. But Joe seemed to relish it and was aided by his great sense of humor and his sarcasm. He usually had a stable of 5-8 interns working for him at a time, and he enjoyed mentoring us and teaching us about criminal law. He mentored many law students over the years. He also loved to engage in political debates with us. I'll never forget how he used to joke with me that I "must be a Republican" because I often buttoned my suit coat. The world could use more people like Joe. He will be greatly missed.

To the family of Joe...

I met Joe years ago and then was reacquainted with him through my daughter Maria who became a friend of his and his wife Gayle.

Joe was one of the most sincere people I had ever known and it was my pleasure to have known him. People like Joe are hard to find.

You have my most sincere condolences and I pray for God to give you strength to get through this most difficult time and may you hold dear your memories of Joe forever.

God bless you Gayle. God bless the entire family that he so loved.
