Joseph Mattoni Obituary

Joseph "Papa Joe" James Mattoni

Joseph James Mattoni, age 75, passed away on Wednesday, June 10, 2020.

Son of Joe and Anna Mattoni; Brother to Sam, Angela and Kathy; Father to Michael and Michelle; Husband of 30 years to Beverly Mattoni; Uncle and Cousin to many, passed away in Toledo Hospital after a short illness.

Joe graduated from Central Catholic High School, Toledo in 1962 and attended the University of Toledo before serving in the U.S. Army as a First Lieutenant from 1967 through 1969. Joe was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army after serving his country in Vietnam.

Joe worked for AP Parts/Fauercia for 35 years in purchasing. He loved his job and the people he worked with over the years. He retired in 2009 and lived everyday to the fullest. He enjoyed putting his garden in every year and playing golf.

Joe's Italian heritage was something he held very close to his heart. He loved telling stories of coming home as a kid to his mom's homemade frittatas and pasta. Friends and family alike would always stop by for dinner and there was always laughter and stories flowing through the kitchen. He worked at Mazzurco's Italian Food Store on Monroe Street as a teenager, which was a rite of passage in the family. The Mattoni's, Mazzurco's, Jianuzzi's, and Penesse's had frequent gatherings, as you do in an Italian family. This was one of Joe's favorite things to do. Nothing was more important than family.

Over the last several years, he enjoyed working side by side with his daughter, Michelle and was the inspiration for the business. They would cook together while listening to Sam Cooke and Jim Croce, singing and laughing throughout. A favorite time of year was in the fall, when so many friends would gather over several days to can tomatoes. Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra would always be playing and he would tell lots of stories about growing up Italian. He always loved the sound of the lids "popping" and considered it a sign of good work.

The family is quite sure he is up above, enjoying every moment of being reunited with his mother and father; beloved sister in law, Carrie Mattoni, wife of brother Sam; and dear cousin, Junior Carl Mazzurco.

Joe never met a stranger and was loved by so many. His golden rule to follow was always treat others as you want to be treated. He loved life to the fullest. He always wore a smile and would whistle with joy whenever possible. He will be greatly missed by all. As he always said, "Life is good."

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made out to The Toledo Humane Society.

Due to the current circumstances a Memorial Service for Joe will be held at a later date.

I also was an employee of AP Parts / Faurecia for 28 years and Joe was my friend. We both retired around the same time and he will be missed a lot. He was one of several people that helped save my job when the plant was shut down, we both moved over to work @ the technical center. He was just a great guy and he saved my bacon on more than one occasion. I will miss him very much and extend my sympathys to his family in this trying time.

My name is Rita Vaughn Ott, and Joe's sister Angela has been a dear friend of mine since sixth grade when we moved in into the St. James district. In fact, we lived right down the street from the Mattonis. I want to thank Michelle for the perfect obituary in memory of her dad, to Sam also. I told Angie that if you had never known Joe, had never even met him, you would know him well after reading his obituary. For those of us who did know Joe, his obit takes us right back to Western Avenue amid a loving, welcoming, sometimes hectic, family. I loved going over to visit. Joe was special. We were just silly grade schools girls back then, but he always made us smile. I know that Joe contributed much to
what has been described as his typical, warm Italian family. I pray that his wife, son and daughter, brother and sisters, and all of his family find peace in knowing they were blessed to be such an intimate part of his life. Rest In peace, Joe, while experiencing the unconditional love of God in the presence of the loved ones who have gone before you.

I was very sad to hear about Joes passing. Joe worked in my team at Faurecia (formerly AP Parts) when I first joined the company in 2002 and until I moved to another position in 2007.

I cant picture Joe without a smile on his face! He was a bundle of positive energy that constantly made people laugh and brought everyone together. Papa Joe was a friend to all and a supportive coworker and mentor.

It has been a long time since I saw Joe last but it is a credit to his powerful life force that I can picture him like we were together yesterday!

My condolences and best wishes to his family. My sympathy for your loss is great but I am also thankful for the many years of love and laughs you had with Joe.

I will miss you Joe. It was so much fun being around you and family when we were growing up. I have not been around much for the last several years. But those childhood memories will be with me always.

I am sorry to hear of Joe's passing. Great guy! I worked with him for many years at AP/Faurecia until his retirement. A story about Joe. John Goerlich was the founder of AP. He worked into his eighties. In his later years he no longer drove. So, at lunch time, he would open his phone directory and call people at random to see if they would take him/go to lunch with him. Usually the Toledo Club. Joe gets the call and thinks someone is playing a joke . . . he hangs up on John! Mr. Goerlich calls him back and asks again and Joe realizes its no joke. Problem is, Joe didn't drive to work that day. As the story goes, Joe borrowed someone else's car and took Mr. Goerlich to lunch. Sometimes the joke isn't on you! Best wishes to all Joe's family and prayers to you. From Jack O'Shea and my wife Anne (Daly) O'Shea.

worked with Joe at Faurecia, he was always quick with a joke and helped keep the craziness of work in perspective. He was always supportive of his colleagues and would often express his pride and love for his family. I hadnt seen him in a long time, but I am sure he is still laughing a lot with us until we meet again. RIP Joe, you were a good friend to me
