Kirk Wray Obituary

(News article) BOWLING GREEN - Kirk Robert Wray, 59, a self-taught computer expert and an amateur thespian who helped shepherd Wood County's WCNet.org into a regional, low-cost Internet service provider, died on Nov. 13 at his home in Bowling Green.

The cause of death was lung cancer, said his mother, Mary Dubbs.

WCNet was begun in 1995, and Mr. Wray signed on as a help desk volunteer for the Internet service provider. It turned into a paid position that allowed him to work from his home, Mrs. Dubbs said.

Mr. Wray, a twin, was born on Feb 22, 1955, in Chico, Calif.

His family moved to Ohio when he was 6, sister Melanie Wray said, because "Mom got pregnant again, and they found out it was another set of twins. They had to move back to Ohio so they could get some family help baby-sitting. ..."

He graduated from Bowling Green High School in 1973. He attended Bowling Green State University but dropped out after a semester after determining college wasn't a good fit.

"He figured he could learn more on his own," his mother said.

Mr. Wray, a life-long bachelor, read constantly, primarily literature, but extended his horizons to various subjects.

"He read his way to knowledge," his sister said. "He always said that cats and books were the best company."

He began acting in 1971 while in high school. Two years later, he was honored by the Diocese of Toledo's youth organization, which staged regional theater competitions, his mother said.

He became involved with the Black Swamp Players in Bowling Green, but left the stage for good in 1994 following the death of a close friend and fellow actor, Mrs. Dubbs said.

He worked for several pizza shops while doing theater and kept in touch with co-workers over the years through the annual "Pub Fest" gatherings for food, fun, and wit.

He supplemented his pizza income as a term-paper ghostwriter.

Kelly Dubbs, a brother, said he guaranteed his student customers a B in exchange for one price or "if more money was involved, he'd guarantee an A. He probably wrote enough term papers to get himself a PhD," Mr. Dubbs said. "He never had a shortage of customers."

He wrote on a variety of topics and was so good he never had to give a refund, Mr. Dubbs added.

The term-paper sideline led to a radio show on student-run WBGU-FM with Mr. Dubbs in the mid-1980s. The station manager, a term-paper customer, agreed to give them a three-hour slot dubbed the Local Lampoon Live Show on Sunday.

"We did it one week and had such fun Kirk asked if we could keep doing this," Mr. Dubbs said. The shows featured some music and skits, with the brothers taking on different voices and characters. Neither brother was a BGSU student at the time.

Mr. Dubbs used a show to skewer university President Paul Olscamp. "He had a bone to pick with Olscamp," Mr. Dubbs said. "I don't know why. Maybe he didn't like the way he was running things."

The show continued for nearly two years, ending about 1984, when university officials pulled the plug on their fun, Mr. Dubbs said.

Mr. Wray was a "huge baseball fan" who followed the Cleveland Indians, taking a score book with him to games to track players and stats, his sister Melanie said.

"He had a lot to do with my mother becoming a baseball fan. He got her interested in the Mud Hens," she said.

Mr. Wray's biological father preceded him in death in 1967.

Mr. Wray is survived by parents, Mary and Marv Dubbs, twin brother, Kevin Wray, twin brothers Terence and Thomas Wray; brothers Kelly and Marty Dubbs, and sisters Alison Deiners, Melanie Wray, and Suzanne Dubbs Hancock.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Witzler-Shank Funeral Home, Perrysburg, where the funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday.

Memorials are suggested to the Black Swamp Players, P.O. Box 601, Bowling Green, Ohio 43402.

To the Wray Family:

Words alone cannot express how grateful I am to Kirk for the role he played in my life. Since my first day at Pagliai's now thirty-two years ago, through my sometimes turbulent college years and on to the Pubfest, it has been a pleasure to benefit from Kirk's wit and wisdom. He played the curmudgeon in public, but privately, there could never be a doubt that he wanted to help me and many others in whatever way he could. I know very few people that had his intelligence as well as an indefatigable curiosity that made him a true renaissance man who carved out his niche in the world as both a memorable character and a good friend. I know that the Wray clan is mourning as your numbers are now one less, but you all need to know from this outpouring of memories how much Kirk was truly loved. Kirk leaves a great legacy - one which I will personally cherish for the rest of my days. Thanks to all of your family for sharing Kirk with the rest of us - we are the better for it.

I miss my brother and it came too soon and too unexpected.
I just always assumed we would all grow old together and share fond memories of our families and old times. I lived with Kirk for awhile and we had a great time. He never hesitated to loan you his car are whatever you needed.
He got me to perform with black swamp where we had a ball. The pictures bring back so many great memories I wish I had more. And now due to bad weather I cannot make it to Ohio for his funeral and it makes me really miss my family and brother even more! I love my family and am so blessed to have all of them and that we are all so close.

Melanie; So sorry for your families loss. We lost my brother Haven to lung cancer in May 2013. It takes them too fast and too young. May your happy memories help you through this difficult time.

I was so glad to see that the picture on this site was large enough to include the Mud Hens shirt. For years his Mothers' Day gift to me was taking me to a Mud Hens game. I will always cherish those memories, and those of our several trips to the Shakespeare Festival in Canada.

Working at Myles' was a crazy, chaotic, fun, and amazing experience. Through all of my 7 years there, a constant for me was Kirk. Working long night shifts together, it was the quiet times I remember most, when waitstaff, drivers, & cooks could talk.

Kirk would chat with me about classical music, and the operas I was performing in. His knowledge of literature, opera, and theater was amazing, especially in the sea of heavy metal/hard rock music that was the soundtrack of the Pub. Seeing him perform "Brush Up Your Shakespeare" in the musical Kiss Me Kate, is a cherished memory. He stole the show with witty banter delivered in a Brooklyn accent and pinstriped zoot suit.

For awhile we lived across the street from each other and would carpool. Those 4 am car rides are some of my favorite Kirk memories - recapping the night's crazies, laughing that we'd both be watching Perry Mason when we got home, really just talking about nothing -priceless memories today.

He also kept all of us 'old Pubbers' in contact creating an email group for us, and organizing Pubfest each year, sometimes goading us to attend. He probably never knew how much those things meant to me, especially when I was across the country far away from family and friends. I should have told him...

I wish I could be there to celebrate his wonderful, albeit too short, life. My love and prayers are extended to his whole family. You will all be in my heart now, and in the coming days.

Much love, Paula

Kirk made my life richer. He was a wonderful brother and a loyal friend. To my family and all Kirk's friends - I look forward to sharing memories and laughs looking back. But right now my heart feels as if it has liquefied to tears.
