The memories I have of Grandma are those of a strong and intelligent woman, one who was ambitious and driven by an innate spirit that cannot be learned. Her drive and intelligence were evidently passed down to all her children, who all are go-getters with incredible minds.
As a child, I never understood why adults would hug for so long. But as I grow older, I understand more than anything. I vividly remember Grandma´s hugs as the longest I´ve ever had. When I was super little, she would even pick me up and hold me. I can still smell her Philosophy hairline and remember how excited I was when she gifted me my own set. She was always so generous, and my favorite of her talents was her arts.
Grandma was a talented woman who excelled at sewing and crochet. Where her analytical mind met her creative spirit. I still have it burned into my memory how to crochet, and it felt so special sitting in the green chair and having her teach me. I have three blankets from her, but the one pictured is the one I´ve had since adoption.
You can see how much I loved it. To literal pieces! To the point that I think it´s why quilt is my comfort fabric. A few years ago, I decided to bring it out of "retirement" because it brought me a sense of peace more than anything else could. And that still stays true till this day. It was made with the intent of love, and I adored that it was made for me by her. I used to say I could never part with it, like it would be the first thing I´d run into a fire for. But then my first little fur-baby passed away, and I sent her off wrapped in the love that the blanket was made with.
I loved how she always made sure to stuff our bellies during visits, and allowed us grandkids to sneak candies all day. Holidays were cozy, her home the hub for all cousins and uncles and aunts. I remember loving that as a child. Just surrounded by family, family that is an extension of her.
She let us be ourselves, was always so interested in our passions and constantly encouraged us to succeed and be the best we can be. I know she especially encouraged our studies & I was always amazed at how smart this woman is!
It´s an incredible feat to live a full life. It can´t be easy. So much heart ache but also so much beauty. There´s an incredible amount of facets to a person but what´s undeniable and most important is the soul. And I always felt loved and seen by her, accepted for being me. I don´t know what else to say aside from that I love you dearly Grandma and those other two blankets will stay with me till I´m old and grey. Your laughter and love and self poured into every seam. Rest in peace.
