Larry H.

Larry H. Murdock, a.k.a. "Larryl," "Momma's boy", "Uncle" and "Heaven Lee" passed away Friday, February 14, 2014. Larry was known and adored by everyone who met him. He was larger than life and had the biggest smile and most obnoxious laugh that will be with us forever. A stranger to no one, Larry was loving, caring, generous, hilarious, and talented. He was a true artist who had the ability to transform ordinary things and spaces into works of art through painting, woodworking, metal sculpture, floral design and photography. Larry was the owner of The Look Salon in Toledo where he made everyone look beautiful and feel special. His clients meant the world to him and he would celebrate them at his annual client parties. He was the best; we are so very proud of him and will miss him beyond words.

Larry was preceded in death by his grandparents; father, Larry Murdock; step-father, Curt Bryan; his beloved Lillian and lifelong friend, Barry Burke. He will be terribly missed by his mother, Patricia Murdock; life partner, Scott McBride; son, Corey (Amy) Mulvaney; sisters, Jan (Jenni) Timm, and Julie (Mark) Vogelsong; grandchildren, Mariah, Hannah and Logan; uncle Bubba; niece, Danielle Timm; nephew, Brandon (Jessica McGinn) Vogelsong; great niece, Baby V; and Scott's family, Joyce, Hal, Jessica (Andy) Wiles and their daughter Mackenzie, Kelsey McBride and Jeff & Rita McBride; childhood friend, Gabi Rieger; his furry kids, Trixi and Tredd; and more friends than we could possibly list.

Visitation will be held at the Walker Funeral Home, 5155 W. Sylvania Ave. (west of Corey Rd.) on Thursday from 5-9 p.m. and Friday from 2-9 p.m. A memorial service celebrating Larry's life will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to Paws and Whiskers, 32 Hillwyck Dr. Toledo, OH 43615. Condolences may be shared at

Every time I see a bald man with a head as shiny as the sun, I do a double take and hope that it's Larry! My family, all four of us, went to Larry for our hair cuts, colors, and stylings. We still talk about him and the little things we remember about him and his shop. I will miss him forever!

I think about Larry frequently. Since his passing there hasn't been a moment that I don't miss him, think about him, yearn to hear his laugh or witness his infectious self. He was the first friend I made after to moving to Toledo in 1983. I was one of his first clients at "5th Avenue" after he got his license. We were instant friends then and still. I hold him close to my heart and always will. I love you Goofy!

I recently moved back to Ohio and was trying to reconnect with Larry when I found this. My heart is very saddened at the news. Larry was such an amazing person. He was also very talented and the only person I would trust to do my hair. I only knew him for a short period of time, but he felt like one of those people I have known forever. I had terribly wanted to reconnect with him. Prayers go out to Scott and Larry's family during this time.

I still cant believe Larry is gone, He had everything going for him. Things were starting to look up again.
He touched so many of us, in so many ways. The way he would light up a room when he walked in.
His smile was... Breath taking. He was so charming, so caring, so generous, so loyal, so bright, so very talented in sooo many ways, there wasn't anything that man couldn't do, NOTHING, .
He was sooo many things , to sooo many people. I don't know what we are going to do without him.

I don't even know how to begin this message. Larry has been on my mind non-stop since I learned of his death. At first, I thought it was a big joke! After reading all of these entries it is easy to see that he changed the lives of many through his kindness, his smile, and by his artistic talents (in and out of the salon). Lar was someone I could open my thoughts, worries, and crazy stories to. We always said that we were meant for each other because of our love of Hostess Ho-Ho's, cheeseburgers, and old tv shows. Larry began cutting my hair 17 years ago. Who will fix it the way he did? Sometimes I never even had to say what I wanted...he just knew. After my Dad passed away, he came to the house and took a lot of old-fashioned tools, signs, and bar equipment. I was happy knowing that it would all get put to good use and not just thrown away. Some of dad's things are currently at The Look. RIP Larry. It's time for you to take care of yourself. I feel so blessed to call you "my friend". Goodbye Lover!

OMG!!! Pat, Jana, and Julie, I am so sorry and saddened at learning of Larry's passing. At this time of year, I am in my winter Arizona home and will not be in my Toledo home till the warmer months; upon learning the sad news, I was shocked. I remember as a very young child how he was referred to as "Little Bit" and that we on the Hansen side of the family called his dad "Little Larry" and I always called his paternal grandfather Uncle Laurence. Aunt Helen (nee Hansen) Murdock was a wonderful woman as was her two children Cousin Larry (Little Larry) and Cousin Helen (Little Helen) and all the grandchildren of Uncle Laurence and Aunt Helen. I haven't seen you all in many years, but trust me, I think of you all often. Sign me cousin Roland, who himself is now an old man. Love and deepest sympathies to all.

I will never forget Larry, he was so lively and fun. Beauty school was a blast with him there. I always remember my first day there walking in and hearing him yell out at me "I know you! You're Rebecca Elizabeth Estelle Bethan!" I hadn't seen him since I was twelve years old and here he remembered my full name! He was truly one of the most wonderful people I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. Although I haven't seen Larry since high school, I was deeply saddened by his passing. I have lots of memories of when we were kids. Especially in our sophomore English class where I am pretty sure it was his goal for me not to retain a thing we were being taught, as he was way more entertaining then the subject matter. He always tried to get me to laugh at inappropriate times and almost always succeeded. We would tell each other jokes, dream about the future, and talk about how a McDonald's double cheeseburger sounded so good. He was a great person with a big heart.I was very fond of him. I will always remember my old friend Larry with a smile, some memories, and maybe a double cheeseburger.

Larry was more than a hairstylist he was a friend. I looked forward to our visits every five weeks and always enjoyed his zest for life. I will miss his reminder texts addressed to "lover" and his hugs goodbye at the end of every visit. My heart is truely breaking right now. I have been going to Larry for 15 years now and he was SO much more than my hair stylist- he was a GREAT friend. No matter what mood I was in when I went to see Larry, he always had a way of making me laugh and I would always walk out of there smiling. He was so insightful knowing what would look best on me that I could give him full reign to "work his magic", as he called it, which made him happy. Scott, Pat, Larry, Jan, Julie, I am so sorry for the loss of such a wonderful man. This picture captures who is was -- a bright light who just made you smile. I remember taking him to my mom's when he was little and we made Christmas cookies -- he was the life of the party even back then. I'm so blessed to have had him do my hair for my wedding and spend some time with him again. He did an amazing job as he always did. He had me laughing as he shared stories of what he had been up to. What an honor to know this man for 14 years! What a legacy he left. We will forever remember him. Every time we brush, wash, do our hair. Those bad hair days we will think of him, miss him, and remember him. Our hearts will break, when we set on that endeavor of finding someone else to beautify us. Knowing his grace, smile, laugh and talent will never, could never, be replaced. I would give anything for one more time in that chair, one more laugh, and one bigger hug. Not only was he my hairstylist, my confidant, my therapist, but my friend! He would throw the parties of the year! That stupid fur real monkey, He still had years later. I will miss him every July 16th, when we would text one another to say Happy Birthday then over inflate one another's heads! Only great people where born that day!! Larry started doing my hair about 18 years ago and I quickly considered him as my friend. He always had something nice to say and I am going to miss our once a month Wednesday chats at The Look more than I can say. While Larry's incredible artistic flair and overall creativity were wonderful, most impressive was his instinctive nature to do something kind. The news of Larry's passing was dreadful and still today, hard to grasp. My tears flowed and I prayed my heart out for Larry after receiving the awful news. Larry was one of a kind! He made me laugh when I knew I looked like hell. We joked, laughed, talked seriously with one another. I remember he sent me a giant and gorgeous flower arrangement when I was in hospital for surgery. I was too out of it to enjoy the flowers until I got home, but the arrangement brought nurses from all over the floor to view the stunningly-beautiful flowers and laugh at his very "graphic" card regarding a "drama queen". He was so very thoughtful and caring. He went out of his way for people he cared about. After one of my surgeries, Larry came over to the house to wash and cut my hair so I would feel better about myself since I was unable to do my hair. He refused to take money from me. Like I said, he was one of a kind. I last saw Larry on February 12th and he showed me a video on his phone he thought was absolutely hilarious. He was right and I asked him to e-mail it to me. I hadn't been on the computer since he died until yesterday and there was Larry's e-mail. I'd forgotten all about it. I've saved it since it will be the last communication I'll have with my dear friend.

To Larry's mother and family, I can't express how very sad I am for your loss. I know his death has left a big hole in your hearts, but I hope you'll know that he touched so many lives in positive waysand that you will always remember that he was a wonderful human being, considerate, thoughtful, loving - just a nice, nice man with a sensitive soul. God must have bigger plans for Larry to have taken him so soon.

I will miss you, my friend. This life will seem less brighter without you in it. May perpetual light shine upon you, Larry. Rest in peace.

I am shocked and very saddened. I always looked forward to my monthly visits with Larry as he worked his magic. I am so very, very, very sad. My deepest sympathies to Larry's entire family and loved ones - he spoke of you often and I know he loved you very much!!

I have known Larry for nearly twenty years. He was more than a hairdresser which is why he had so many lifetime clients. He made everyone feel beautiful and listened to everyone's troubles and worries, as well as shared our joys and happy times. As I look at this picture of such a beautiful person with a beautiful smile my heart breaks knowing we will never see him again. My heart goes out to Scott and his family and the hurt they are feeling right now. Also everyone that is just as devastated as I am. The world has lost such an amazing full of life person it is hard to believe. We will see you again in Heaven "Love" that is for sure. How ironic to lose you on Valentines Day... a day of shared love and you called everyone "love" or "lover". I don't think this man knew how loved he was... I don't think any of us realized how much we loved him. Larry you will be in our hearts forever. LOVE YOU DEARLY!!!

I met Larry in 1995. He was working at 5th Avenue (his first hair cutting job). I was one of his first clients after he got his license. We stayed friends ever since. I call him my friend because he was more than just my hair dresser. Larry and I supported each other through lifes challenges and laughed as much as we cried. I am devasted by his loss and will miss him more than words can ever express. Larry definitely left a legacy, always original and one-of-a-kind I think that's why we bonded so. "Thanks Lover"
