Lillian Gillhouse Obituary

GILLHOUSE Lillian May (Sparling) Lillian May (Sparling) Gillhouse was born November 27, 1921, in Toledo Ohio, and died peacefully, June 20, 2008, in Springfield, Ohio after a brief illness. Lillian served churches in Temperance, Michigan, Kettering, Columbus and Springfield Ohio, with her husband of 50 years, the late Pastor Donald Gillhouse. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, and a caring friend to all who knew her. Lillian was a veteran of the United States Army (WAC) during WWII. She was a graduate of Wittenberg University. She was a life-long elementary school teacher and retired from Northwestern School System. She is survived by her sister Anne Miller of Fredericksburg, Texas; her children, Susan McKnight of Warren, Vermont, Sharon Hammond (John) of Kirkland, Washington, Sandy Jaray (Ken) of Manitou Springs, Colorado, and Steven Gillhouse (Laura) of Naperville, Illinois. She is also survived by her grand-children, Ben, Katie, Kevin, Blake, Ian, Seth, Taylor, Natalie, Rachel and her 2 great-grandchildren, Stella and Charlotte. She will be dearly missed by her close friend and companion, Roland Matthies. A service celebrating her life will be held Thursday, June 26 at 1:00 p.m., at First Lutheran Church, 30 South Wittenberg Ave., Springfield, Ohio. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to The Donald Gillhouse Scholarship fund at Trinity Lutheran Seminary.

I hold fond memories of Mrs. Gillhouse, as she was my teacher in the third grade at Northwestern Elementary in 1983. She was always such a kind woman who I remember was very passionate about her teaching. I also remember ringing her door bell at her home just to say hello when I was visiting a neighbor of hers, she was so kind even though I had moved on to the next grade. She was one of many teachers from my youth who I feel made a difference in my life. My thoughts and prayers are with your family at this difficult time.

Dear Susan, Sandy, Sharon & Steve,
Your mother was very dear to me and my parents, Arthur and Martha Lutz (who died in 2002 and 2003). I got to know her a few years before their deaths when she became a wonderful friend to them at Oakwood in their declining years. I often teased her that whenever I went to dad's room in the care center, she was there! That was before Roland of course! And she certainly brightened Roland's later years. I will send him a card. Poor Roland. Love to you all, Marcia Lutz Blust (I cannot come on Th. Sorry!)

Dear Susan, Sharon, Sandy & Steve,

I am a cousin of your dad's and send my sympathy, over the state lines, to each of you.

Your mom and dad were gracious and caring to all they met. Your mom shared memories about a family cradle which I had not known about.

You might be interested in knowing that my daughter's wedding attendants carried lighted candles in a hurricane globe just as your mom's did (or maybe it was a candle in a muff). As a child their wedding made a lasting impression on me.

To God be the glory for her life. I rejoice in her graduation into eternal life.

You are scattered to the winds but she has taught you well. Please know you will always be welcome in my home in Ottawa Lake, Michigan or Palmetto, Florida.

My dad, Edwin Kroll, was your grandma Gillhouse's brother.

May God Bless each of you in your endeavors as you carry on as Children of God.

Love, Shirley Kroll Brodbeck, Mrs. Marvin.

Dear Gillhouse Children...
My Mother and Father, Minnie and Walter Powers of Temperance, Michigan, considered your parents good friends. I was confirmed at St. Paul's and became an organist there when I was 11 years old in 1959. I have very fond memories of both your parents.

My Mother is 98 years old and lives in Haines City, Florida. I know she will be saddened by your Mother's passing.

Please know the impact your parents had on so many of us who attended St. Paul's.

With sympathy,
Evelyn Powers,
