Hello,
Mark was my friend at Rogers High School and at Bowling Green State University. He was a gentle person with a kind heart. The world needs more people like Mark. I feel privileged to have been his friend. My warmest wishes of peace to all of you.

Dear Kim and family:
I was so very saddened to learn of Mark's illness and passing. Please accept my deepest sympathy for your loss of a truly great man.
Mark was, indeed, one of kind. His integrity, kindness, sensitivity, and drive to do everything with excellence, was a combination special and rare. I will always remember his huge heart for his family and friends, and his ability to look beyond race and color to truly see the heart of a person.
I am thankful that I was honored to get to know your family, and thankful for the years of friendship that we shared. They are something I have always treasured.
Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you all.
Love & Blessings always,
in Christ Jesus,
Kara

As Mark's track and CC coach at Rogers High School I have always had a special relationship with him that went far beyond athletics.
There are many who are deeply indebted to Mark for the inspiration and guidance he offered them while attending Rogers. Mark was a mentor to many and took pride in helping everyone regardless of their grade in school or social standing.
He had leadership qualities far beyond his years that helped to bring out the best of everyone he came in contact with. His athletic talents were obvious, but his ability to affect others in a positive way often went unnoticed.
Mark was a very special young man. I predicted without hesitation that he would succeed in the future as he was very goal driven and worked extremely hard to meet the expectation or others and himself. Mark set the standard for excellence on all of the athletic teams he was a member of.
My wife Joyce, daughter Jody and I, recall fondly the many trips taken with all member of the Butler family as he competed in track and CC meets throughout Ohio and elsewhere. The good times shared with his Frank and Eloise, David, Matt and Mary will always be special to us.
In track competition it is not how you start, but how you finish. Mark was a winner in many ways, and will always be FIRST as far as I am concerned. God Bless you Mark.

Dear Kim (and Family),
We were grieved today after our return from Branson to get onto Facebook and see this news. Your family was always so special to the Ziebolds, you, Mark, and the children. You are so much a part of who we are as Christians, and we count it a privilege to have known you for so many years. Your wisdom, your friendship, and your love of Jesus were always an inspiration to us. Know that our hearts and prayers are with you once again as you travel through this difficult chapter in life. I reminded myself many times of 1 Thess. 4:13-18 after the "loss" of our first two children. I remind you of that Scripture truth now as you travel this road as a family. Read it together, please, and take comfort in knowing that it isn't over yet. For Mark, it has just begun. May we stick together and love one another until the coming day when we can all be reunited, never to be separated again. Hold the memories of Mark close in your hearts until that time. Pull strength from each other as a family. Hold your friends close.
God's blessings and peace on the entire Butler Family,
Tom & Pam Ziebold (& Family)

To Dave, Mary, Kim and Butler Family. Kim unfortunately I did not have the pleasure of meeting you. I ran cross country with Mark, Dave and Mary at Rogers High School. There are no words I can say that will take away the pain and sadness in your hearts. I can say I know without a shadow of a doubt that Mark is with our Lord Jesus right now and that's the best gift anybody could ever receive. I can still remember Mark's smile he had this special glow and presents about him . He was a true blessing and inspirationt to me and several other people. Coach Renaux has kept me up to date over the years about Mark and his kids running careers. I will be praying at the Lord Jesus takes away the pain and sadness in your hearts and that he will floods your minds and hearts with memories of Mark that will never fade away.

Farewell my friend, I want to ask God to bring you back to us, but then again that would not be fair to those that now inhabit heaven and those yet to come. I know they have mansions; but if they were to have organizations in heaven I'm not sure if you would be on the elite tactical Angelic swat team, the golf team, the sports analytics team, the positive influential speaking team, the diversity training team, the family consultation team, or the gourmet food critic's team.
That's right; you would be on all 7+ simultaneously and give 100% to each. As your complex character and superior intellect enabled you to wear numerous hats and manage them with the utmost precision.
Our memories were many, but with your illness I watched as your priorities changed (though never your strength), which we all should take note of. Things that many of us feel are important, can be like mere dust in the wind. One of the many things that you did teach me is that friendship, family and love are inseparable. If friendship is displayed in heaven, I know for a fact that will be one of the crowns worn upon your head.
He may have, but I cannot ever remember my Father telling me he loved me, but you were not afraid to utter those words when it meant the most. That is why in your final months, there was no other place to be than at your side helping you through your journey. You will be missed by countless and those that never met you, missed a great one!
Steve Combs (Rogers HS - 75), but most importantly Brother through the power of Friendship.

To Mark's Family and Sister, Mary,
My husband and I remember Mark as coaches at Rogers High School. The tribute from his brother David brought many tears to my eyes. He was an outstanding track athlete right through the State level. Mark and the entire Butler Family were positive models for the school and community. We were fortunate to coach his sister Mary who carried on the family tradition both academically and athletically. We saw Mark at his Father's funeral, and my husband Ron remarked at how sharp Mark looked and dressed. This was unusual, because Ron never notices clothes unless it's an athletic uniform. We recently saw Mark at a track invitational when his son was running. I believe he ran some of the same events as Mark. We saw his daughter run for Liberty-Benton and followed her career to the individual state championship as well as the team championship.
I know how proud he was of his family although you never heard of word of boasting or self-indulgence. May you keep his wonderful memories and legacy in your minds and hearts forever.

I knew Mark before, and better, than anyone on Earth. I want you to know a little bit about the naughty, arrogant, cocky boy that you see in this picture. To me this picture represents him better than any other. The M. in Mark M. Butler could have easily stood for Mischievous
When we were little Mark and I physically fought a lot. After Mr. Reasonover would drop us off at home, we would be alone until my parents got home from work. He would sing this song to me called, Low Down Looney. At the point where the song goes and Low Down Looney drank a case of beer. I would try to attack him because in my juvenile mind I thought he was calling me Low Down Looney and implying I drank a case of beer. At the time this upset me very much. Those of you who know us can see the irony in this. Because if we were to count every beer I have had in my life it would amount to ummmore than a few...cases. My brother, on the other hand, in all his life never drank as much as a six-pack. But this was our ritual and we would fight and wrestle the over Low Down Looney song. Later in life we found this hilarious.
My brother Mark Butler was an Adonis, a Greek God, the best athlete I ever saw with my own one eye. And, I went to Michigan and played basketball with many large men who went on to be professional athletes. But what Mark could do on a football field bordered on magic. In track his ability to utterly destroy people would make a whole stadium of people suck in their breath at the same time, a big collective oooohhh and aahhhh. I could never measure up to him athletically, no matter how much I tried.
Here's another true story: Trying to tackle Mark from behind in a backyard football game, he kicked out one of my front teeth, and left me eating dust, and blood. The next day we played again and I tried to tackle him the same way, and he kicked out the other one. He toughened me up in many ways.
Everyone should know that my brother Mark was not always perfect; he was not always an angel. He MADE himself that way through discipline, intestinal fortitude, and great, great commitment to his faith. He became a greater person than he was a great athlete, which is something I would not think was possible. His commitment to God was 100% and he was admired and respected by anyone who came into contact with him.
He was my brother and I loved him very much. He was all the things I was not and it was an honour for me to be his brother. I wish dearly I could be there for him now. I wish dearly I could have spoken to him one last time. But all of our conversations of the last few years ended the same way. I love you man.
I love you Mark. I miss you man. Conceiving of life without you is very strange. I will see you on the other side My Brother. And we will race and wrestle, and you will win and I won't mind. Being your younger brother is one of the greatest things to ever happen to anyone.
I love you man.
