Mark Shambarger Obituary

Mark Charlie Shambarger

December 11, 1954 - February 18, 2026

Mark Charlie Shambarger, a cherished architect and devoted family man, passed away in Toledo, Ohio, on February 18, 2026, at the age of 71, after a courageously fought battle with cancer over the course of 2 years. Born on December 11, 1954, Mark was a lifelong resident of Toledo, where he cultivated a flourishing career as the co-owner of Coger/Shambarger Architects. His passion for architecture was complemented by an unwavering dedication to his craft, earning him numerous accolades, including his status as a registered member of the AIA.

Mark's life was marked by deep love and commitment to his family. He was the beloved husband of Bonnie J. Shambarger (nee Rowland) for over 40 years, a partnership filled with countless memories, especially their shared love for travel. This bond extended to their daughter, Julie (Jacob) Fowler; and their treasured grandchildren, Christian Dial, Mackenzie Dial, and Jase Shambarger; along with step-grandchildren, Kaydence, Eli, and Nolan Fowler; and his dear sister, Karen Deibler (nee Shambarger); in addition to many loving nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends. Mark took immense pride in being a husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle, always motivated by the love he had for them.

He had a warm and generous spirit that shone brightly in all his relationships. Mark was known as a genuine good person who worked diligently for the happiness of those around him, whether they were family, friends, or clients. He would go above and beyond to support others, embodying the true essence of a family man.

Mark was not only a dedicated professional but also an individual with varied hobbies and interests that he cherished deeply. He took great joy in caring for his 1979 MGB and rescued cats, including the beloved Fern, Millie, Dusty, and Katie. His fondness for the outdoors was reflected in his delight in feeding and fattening up the squirrels and enjoying pit fires while grilling in the backyard. Additionally, Mark had a knack for assembling model cars and was an avid fan of Formula 1 racing and NASCAR. His wide collection of hats added a personal touch to his adventurous personality.

Mark's achievements were abundant, but none prouder than his role as an architect and the loving family man he had become. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness, love, and hard work, remembered fondly by all who knew him.

Preceding him in death were his mother, Virginia Shambarger (nee Hockenberry); father, Darold Shambarger; granddaughter, Naomi Virginia Dial; three brothers-in-law; and one nephew.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate Mark's life through a series of services. Visitation will be held on Monday, February 23, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., at Newcomer Funeral Home, Northwest Toledo, on West Laskey Rd., with a prayer service to follow at 7:00 p.m. On February 24, 2026, visitation will continue at Christ the King Catholic Church, from 9:30 a.m. until the Mass beginning at 10:30 a.m. Following the mass, Mark will be laid to rest at Ottawa Hills Memorial Park.

As we remember Mark Charlie Shambarger, let us hold close the lessons he taught us-love fiercely, work hard, and always find joy in the little things. His spirit will forever resonate in the hearts of those who loved him.
