Nora M. Sutherland
Celebrating a Life of Compassion, Dedication, and Service. Nora M. Sutherland, R.N., age 93, of Ottawa Hills, passed away peacefully on December 4, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love, generosity, and heartfelt compassion in the Greater Toledo area. Nora's life was marked by unwavering devotion to her family, friends, and community, touching countless lives through her selfless service and kindness.
Born on August 7, 1932, in Coniston, Ontario, Canada, Nora was the cherished daughter of Dr. William S. Johns and Norah Shaw Johns. She graduated from Port Credit High School in 1951, where she excelled as Captain of the Cheerleading Squad and was a valued member of both the volleyball and basketball teams. Nora's grace and charm were recognized when she was named First Runner Up in the 1950 Miss Port Credit High School Beauty Pageant, and she held the prestigious role of Eaton Department Store Representative in her senior year.
Nora pursued her passion for healing by training at The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, earning her Registered Nurse qualification in 1954. During her final year of training, she met her beloved husband, Dr. Gerald W. Sutherland. The couple married on November 20, 1954, beginning a partnership that spanned 66 years. Nora supported Gerry through medical school, working as a nurse in her father's practice and at Queens Way Hospital in Peel County, Ontario.
In 1964, Nora and Gerry relocated to
Toledo, Ohio, where she continued her nursing career in her husband's medical office. Nora's dedication extended beyond her professional life; she was deeply involved in her community for over six decades. Her volunteer work included serving as President of the Maplewood Elementary School Parent Teacher Association, inaugural Chairman of Mercy Hospital Mobile Meals, Cub Scout Den Leader, neighborhood Flower Committee member, supporter of the Sylvania Tam O'Shanter and Metro Hockey League, and Advisory Board Member for Dixon Center for Military and Veterans Services.
Faith played a central role in Nora's life. She was an active member of Hope Lutheran Church and later joined Epworth Methodist Church. Nora cherished her connections with local organizations, supporting causes through her family memberships at Highland Meadows and Inverness Country Clubs.
Nora was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Dr. G. W. Sutherland, in 2021; and her beloved daughter-in-law, Frances Denny Sutherland, earlier this year. She is survived by her son, Gary (Hilton Head, SC); daughter, Noralyn (Toledo); son, David, and wife, Bonnie (Alexandria, VA); and son, Robert, and wife, Deanna (Medina, OH). Nora was a proud grandmother to Derek, Robert, Lindsey, Ryan, Kevin, Caitlyn, Michael, Andrew, Patrick, Aimee, and Gary; and she leaves behind eleven beloved great-grandchildren.
