Norton Kale Obituary

Norton Kale

Norton Kale, 89, of Toledo, passed away on April 21, 2025. Norty was born in Toledo to Tillie (Millstein) and Charles Kale on April 30, 1935. He attended Woodward High School and then the University of Toledo, where he obtained a B.A. in Business Administration. Following in his father's footsteps, he was the owner of East Side Auto Parts and Norty's for all of his adult life.

A beloved husband, he is survived by his wife of 41 years, Susan (Bame) Kale. He was the proud father of Lawrence (Mary Jo) Kale, Jeffrey (Abby) Kale, Andrew Kale, Cindy Kirby, Steve (Candee Ellsworth) Groh and Deb (Eustice James) Groh; and the wonderful grandfather of 13 grandchildren who loved him very much.

Norty was an accomplished tennis player, a skillful bowler, and an antique car enthusiast. He proudly served in the U.S. Army as a military policeman. Norty, also known as "Tunie," exemplified overwhelming kindness and patience, and was a wonderful mentor to many people throughout his life.

A graveside service will be held at Beth Shalom Cemetery on April 24th at 11:00 a.m. Should you wish to honor the memory of Norty, please consider donating to The Congregation B'Nai Israel, Chabad House or Tunnel to Towers Foundation.

Debra and I were saddened to hear of my Uncle Norty´s passing. I had last seen him several years ago and was really looking forward to a 1-on-1 conversation for old time´s sake about his family upbringing with his older sister, my Mother. From my early upbringing, he went by the nickname "Tunnie ", short for petunia (according to that older sister) and he worked at "The Shop" with my grandfather and Uncle Jack. I recall his restored Model T Ford, which he drove in Toledo´s annual holiday parades. During my high school years, Norty hired me several times to paint graphics on the metal property fence along 1st Street. I recall several great conversations with him over lunch, and his calm and rationale advise was always reassuring. In later years, we always dropped in on Norty and Sue when visiting Toledo, to admire their incredible collection of antiques and good conversations over dinners (Norty loved to go out to eat). My Uncle was the living embodiment of "don´t worry - be happy".

Rest in Peace, Norty. You were my favorite relative of all. Thanks for the memories.
