Richard Schoen Obituary

SCHOEN Richard H. SCHOEN Richard H. Richard H. Schoen, Past President of Schoen Paving, passed away early Tuesday morning, August 28, 2007 at his home in the arms of his family. Born in Toledo, August 10, 1923 to Clifford and Catherine Schoen, Dick graduated from Central Catholic High School and John Carroll University, Cleveland. A WW II Army Medic in the 95th Infantry Division, he received a Bronze Star and Purple Heart when he was wounded Nov. 27th, 1944 in the battle at Metz, France. Dick was the retired president of Schoen Paving Inc. and retired President of the Richard H. Schoen Company. A man generous with his time, he was a volunteer at St. Vincent's Hospital, St. Anne's Hospital, and a longtime supporter of Foundation for Life. His membership and involvement at Gesu Parish spanned many years. Dick's faith in Christ was his source of strength, and his greatest pride was his family, whom he spoke about as his "Heaven on Earth". He was a friend to many, and a "Man for Others" as minister to countless people, both friends and strangers. We are comforted in knowing that Dick, who so readily embraced others, is now in the warm embrace of our Lord. He is the husband of Jeanne Hylant Schoen and was preceded in death by Elaine Mayer Schoen - married for 40 years and mother of 14 children. His children are Greg (Sheila), Bill (Carol), Mary Beth, Cory Bracken (Jim), Bob (Sue), Fritz, Tom (Lori), Janet Adams (Marc), Ellen Breininger (Les), Dan (Susan), Jeff (Sheila), Anne Eddingfield (John), Kate Kelly (Kevin), Julie Dunsmore (Jim); 58 grand-children and 11 great-grand-children also survive along with sisters, Pat Schoen Smith and Peggy Schoen Wheeler and step children, Bob (Trudy) Hylant, Pat (Ann) Hylant, Dan (Carol) Hylant, Steve (Karen) Hylant, Polly Tracy (deceased) (Geof), Sandra Hylant, Jeannie Hylant, Mike (Tina) Hylant, Richard (Clare) Hylant. There are 20 step grandchildren and 3 step great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by brothers, Jack Schoen and Jim Schoen, and sisters, Mary Schoen Uhl, Joanne Schoen Kurt. Friends may call at the Coyle Funeral Home, 1770 S. Reynolds Rd., on Thursday from 5-8 p.m. and Friday from 2-8 p.m. where a Rosary will be recited at 7 :30 p.m. The funeral services will begin in the mortuary Saturday at 10:15 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass of Christian Burial in Gesu Church at 11 a.m. Burial in Calvary Cemetery. Memorials may take the form of a contribution to the Foundation for Life, Catholic Charities, Diocese of Toledo or the Northwest Ohio Hospice Association. September 21, 2007

Dear Schoen Family Members; My father worked for Mr. Schoen during the golden age of Toledo building, the 1950's and 1960's, as "Richard the Welder." When Richard Elling died in 2001, Mr. Schoen came and offered to be a pall bearer at the funeral. He will always be remembered by our family. Their work in Toledo and vicinity will remain their greatest monuments! --All our love, Michael M. Elling family, Sharon, Tennessee

Dear Tom Lori and family, just to let you know we are thinking of all of you at this time of sorrow. Your family will always hold a very special spot in our hearts and life. We will never forget everything you did for us, in our years of need, you always knew the right time to contact us. Remember Christmas of 1994 our xmas tree was because you said either come and pick one out or i will deliver one, Thanks so much and the BRICK you so thoughtfully delivered on xmas eve with JOSHUA engraved. Know that our prayers are with all of you at this time. As the days and years pass you find a place to hold your grief, but you will never forget. Thank you for being who you are. Dear Schoen Clan:
It is at times like these that I wish I lived closer to home. I have been thinking of all of you so much ever since I heard the news and especially today as you all gathered to celebrate his life. "Nuncle Dick" as he used to refer to himself as, always made me laugh. I have been reminiscing about how blessed we all were to grow up with each other in a neighborhood that truly felt like it was family--whether or not we were blood related. Though I don't see you all very much, you are so dear to my heart and I can imagine how hard it is to let your sweet dad go. It's hard to let another one from the neighborhood go, but he has quite a welcoming committee there, especially Aunt Elaine! Blessings on all of you and thank you Uncle Dick for a childhood filled with memories of joy and love.
Love,
Chrissy Lasso Anderson Jacob

I had the pleasure of meeting "Mr. Schoen" at St.Vincent's ....what a small world this is, Mr.Schoen, knew my family,( years ago, before I was even thought of, Great-Uncles had been employed by the "Schoen" Co.,)
the way he spoke about my family, and my family spoke of him, was a mutual feeling of love/respect,
they both use to share many stories w/me :)
what a "WONDERFUL" man "Mr Dick Schoen" was, "AWESOME" man, just like his cousin "Father Charles Sullivan"...two of the "GREATEST" men I've ever met, "BOTH" will "NEVER" be forgotten.

Our Sincere Condolences,

To the Schoen family, I was saddened today to read the online Blade obituary of Dick's passing. Although I have been gone from Toledo some 12 years, I have wonderful memories of Dick and the Schoen Paving Co. ... they were "good" competitors and wonderful people. Dick certainly leaves behind memories of his strong ethics ... he was one of "the best".

It is with deep sadness that we have heard of the death of Dick Schoen, father, brother and husband.

Even though the last time we saw him at "Uncle Herm's" he was very ill, he remained as positive and upbeat as always.

He will always be an inspiration to us all, especially for his deep religious example.

To Cory and all the Schoen siblings - my deepest sympathy on the loss of your Dad - he was a special father figure to so many who were not even his children. I am grateful to consider myself among them. From Little Flower, when I lost my own Dad, through St. John's, he always had a kind and inspiring word. I am especially thankful for his kindness when I was surprised to find him volunteering at St. Vincent's when my Mom was in her last illness. I am so sorry I will not be there with you to share and enjoy all the wonderful stories of his marvelous life, but my prayers and thoughts are with you all.

Bill,
I am sorry for your loss. As a late teen I remember being stunned to realize that your Dad, clearly a master of his own universe, was still humble enough to be at 6:30 mass on a sunny summer weekday morning. He was the rare individual who improved everyone he came in contact with and I remain honored to have known him.
