Ronald Miller Obituary

Ronald L. Miller

Ronald Louis Miller, age 78, passed away peacefully with family and friends by his side on March 13, 2025, after a battle with Parkinson's disease. While he will be sorely missed, we are grateful to know that he is at peace with God and no longer suffering.

Ron was born May 22, 1946, and adopted by Wayne and Marie (Eichenberg) Miller. He is survived by his wife, Marcia; his sister, Barbara St. Arnaud and her daughter, Aimee; sisters-in-law, Marlene Wenk (William) and Mary Fahle; niece, Jennifer Smith (Dave); great-niece, Maisie Smith; and great-nephew, Henry Smith.

Ron grew up in Pontiac, Michigan, until his family moved to Toledo, Ohio, when he was in 8th grade. He attended Christ the King then St. Francis High School. Ron received a Bachelor of Education from the University of Toledo along with a Master of Economics.

Ron spent his entire career at St. John's Jesuit High School, starting in the fall of 1968. When he left the classroom, he then worked in Alumni Affairs until this past summer. To say Ron was a teacher is not enough. He was a coach, a mentor, and a friend to his students and colleagues. He has stayed in contact with alumni from 1969 to the present. Many have thanked Ron for his teaching of mathematics to prepare them for college, Calculus, and taught them see the beauty in mathematics; but more importantly that he helped them become "Men for Others", the motto of St. John's. Ron truly believed that everyone should be their best and would help them reach that achievement. He nurtured his students' minds and souls. He was involved in the Kairos retreats from when they started until 2024; showing his students that God was vital in their lives, and they needed to develop and deepen their faith.

Ron enjoyed sharing his love of travel and sports with students, and then with Marcia, his wife of 35 years. He would take students to college football games, Detroit Red Wings and Detroit Tigers out-of-town, as well as home games. The road trips gave the students an opportunity to get to know Ron on a more personal level and become a role model for them. He maintained these friendships with his students and their families through the years by visiting them on Christmas Eve dressed as Santa to deliver a gift and share in the spirit of the season.

Appropriately, Ron met Marcia at a St. John's football game because a friend, JoAnn Herr, thought they would make a good pair. It took eight years for the confirmed bachelor to propose to Marcia and it became the greatest time of their lives. They traveled all around the world making it to all seven continents, creating remarkable memories and deepening their love for each other. Ron followed the Detroit Red Wings throughout his life and has owned season tickets for forty years. Sharing that passion, Marcia and Ron would travel to games whenever possible, including on their honeymoon. They also shared a love of dogs and always had two cocker spaniels, a his and hers, by their sides. Their love and respect for each other was demonstrated every day.

Please share your memories with Ron's family and friends by visiting Ansberg-West Funeral Home at 3000 W. Sylvania Avenue on Friday, March 21, 2025, from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, March 22, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at Sylvania St. Joseph's Church. The burial will take place at Toledo Memorial Park after the Mass. Memorials are asked to be given to the Ron Miller Alumni Sons Scholarship at St. John's Jesuit High School. Ron and Marcia would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and nurses' aides at all the facilities that Ron was at from October to March, and special thanks to the staff at Regency Hospital and Northwest Ohio Hospice on Detroit Avenue.

I had to take Algebra II in summer school, and Ron was the teacher. Says something of his dedication that he was teaching summer school, but it went way beyond that--his generosity, patience and kindness were really something. I hadn't known him well until that summer, and came away feeling like I had a new friend on the faculty. Fifty years later, at the 2023 reunion, Ron was there, and it was great to see him. His warmth and friendship radiated, and it was a shot to the heart to see him again. He was proud to have been a part of our lives, proud of how we'd turned out, and proud of his tenure at St. John's. I'm proud to have had such a fine teacher, whose A saved my bacon...just took a touch of instructional magic that Ron possessed. I wish him well in his new journey, and a loving receptions along the way.

It was great to see Mister Miller at the class of 73 reunion. I got an excellent photograph of him. He thanked me for taking it. He was sitting right behind me for dinner. It was so good to see him.

Ron was my high school baseball coach from '76 - '80. He was a great coach and full of personality. His 6.6 Litre Gold Trans Am was a topic of many locker room conversations. God has received Ron into the Kingdom and he's probably coaching 3rd. RIP in peace Coach Miller.

Hal R and I had switched identities in Ron´s math class his first year at St. John´s. Initially we had intended for it to be a practical joke which would last maybe a day or two but we had so much fun with it the scenario played out beyond the 1st semester. Ron also taught my son in the 90´s and every time I encountered Ron throughout the years all he could do was smile & shake his head. An awesome teacher who exemplified "A Man for Others". RIP Ron!!!
