Rose Barone Obituary

Rose "Rosie" Barone

Rose "Rosie" Barone, 98, of Ottawa Hills, died peacefully on Sunday, February 4, 2018, at the Perrysburg Center of Hospice of Northwest Ohio. Rosie was born to Salvatore and Crocetta (Filingeri) Ferrara in Montelepre, Sicily on December 5, 1919. At the tender age of four, Rosie and her parents traveled by boat to the United States, coming through Ellis Island. They settled in Toledo where she graduated from Central Catholic High School and Mary Manse College. Upon graduation she became a teacher at Clay Elementary School, a position she held until she became married.

Rosie met John J. Barone, whom she married in 1950 at The Holy Rosary Cathedral. Together they had and raised five boys. Rosie loved taking care of her boys and made their home a loving and welcome place for all to gather. Friends and neighbors enjoyed coming to Rosie's kitchen for her famous bread and pizza. The neighbors were always willing to help in canning tomatoes and in sharing the family life. Rosie lived for her family and her children. Rosie was someone who taught by example. Learning family traditions, showing respect towards others, and the love of family were daily teachings she used in raising her boys.

Rosie was a profuse knitter and a key member of "The Share and Care Knitting Group," which was a group dedicated to knitting luxury scarves for the poor and homeless in the Toledo area. In that group, Rosie was known as "The Master Knitter." She was a long time member of Gesu Parish. Rose was very proud that she and her sons established the Rosie's Scholars Fund at Central Catholic High School to provide tuition assistance for needy students.

In 1981, Rosie and her sons, John, Mike and Phil, opened Rosie's Family Restaurant which grew into a local chain of restaurants and eventually developed into Rosie's Italian Grille. After 35 years, many of Rosie's famous recipes are still in use.

Preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John; son, Andrew; daughter-in-law, Sandra; Rosie is survived by her sons, Dr. Frank Barone (Lisa), John Barone II (Amie), Michael Barone (Debra), Philip Barone (Betsy); grandchildren, Jeffrey (Evanne), Joey, Francesca, Oliver, Andie, Lucie, David (Kathryn), Lauren (Max), Olivia, Philip, Jr., Rosaria "ZaZa", John "Jack", Mary Sophia, Angelina, Vincenzo, John, Andrew II (Laura), and Anthony Barone; sisters, Ann Scuderi (Anthony) and Lucy Pinciotti (Gabriel).

Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 8, from 4-8:30 p.m. at the Walker Funeral Home, 5155 Sylvania Ave. A prayer service will be held at 8 p.m. Thursday evening. The funeral Mass will be held on Friday, February 9, at 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady, Queen of the Most Holy Rosary Cathedral, 2535 Collingwood Blvd. Entombment will follow at Calvary Cemetery.

Memorials in honor of Rose Barone may be made to: Rosie's Scholars Fund at Central Catholic High School, 2550 Cherry St., Toledo, OH 43608.

The Barone Family would like to thank Rosie's loving caregivers, Linda, Martha, Carol, Theresa, Suzanne; and Susie, Amy, and the caring staff at evolv Medical Aesthetics; the exceptional staff of nurses and physicians at The Toledo Hospital, Kingston Rehab, Hospice of Northwest Ohio in Perrysburg; Kish Transportation and trusted assistant, Christina Older.

Aunt Rose was a wonderful woman. She was truly ahead of her time having earned a college degree, working as a teacher and later a successful business woman all in a time when women were seen, not heard. Rose was not afraid to speak her mind and be heard. Having raised five successful boys was no small task. The results speak for themselves. She was greatly loved, and she will even be more greatly missed.

Frank, John, Mike, Phillip, I was so sorry to hear about your mom, Mrs Barone was amazing, everything she did for all of us, the bread, the chicken soup, the party for St Johns graduation, the rides in the green and white Jeep, all the snacks after tag football in your back yard. I feel lucky to have known your family, it was always a fun time growing up around the Barone house. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your families.

My wonderful fourth grade teacher at Clay Elementary in 1948-49. I thought of her often, but never knew that Miss Ferrara became Rosie Barone. I'm sorry that I never made the connection to the wonderful life she led. My sincere condolences to all the family.

I have many great memories of Rosie through work, her home and at the restaurant on Friday nights. She was a terrific gal and made a couple home made meals for me at her home. Sympathy to the boys and families.

I have not seen her in years, but vividly remember her whether at SCC, St Francis or at home as always being gentle, kind and full of gracious good humor. She amazed me by always maintaining her calm femininity while being surrounded by five active sons and a strong husband!

To me, she achieved what eludes so very many of us.... living a simple life filled with love, God and family. My prayers are with you Frank, John, Phil and Mike

My parents, Elmer and Fannie Fleck, always had such wonderful times with the Barone's., Almost always included with the group was Coach Alex Steve and his wife, Marge, from Sylvania Country Club. I have so many fond memories of Rose - her laughs was infectious - she was always so happy and positive. I swam with the Barone boys at SCC, which were "famously" know as the Sylvania Sea Lions. She has left a tremendous legacy with her boys and grandchildren. She'll be missed but never forgotten.
