Steve Pipoly Obituary

PIPOLY Steve Steve Pipoly passed away at his home, at the age of 88, on December 14th, 2006. He was known by many as "Mr. Golf" in Northeastern Ohio. He attended Ohio State University, majoring in engineering, where he lettered on the golf team. In addition to winning many local tournaments he was a four-time qualifier for the US Amateur, two times for the US Open, played twenty seven times in the Ohio Golf Association Amateur, won the club championship at Tippecanoe Country Club seventeen times, and regularly shot his age between 1988 and 1998. He was a lifetime member of the board of governors for the Ohio Golf Association and founded the Youngstown District Golf Association as well as Fonderlac Country Club. He was inducted into the Ohio Golf Hall of Fame in 2003. Until his retirement at age 75, he was the chief contributor to the business success of the Boardman Supply Company, a major supplier of building materials in the Youngstown area for decades. His best friend and wife of 59 years, Tillie, preceded him in death. He was extremely proud of the legacy he leaves behind, including children, Linda Book M.D. pediatric gastroenterologist and liver transplant specialist (spouse, Robert Book PhD psychologist), George Pipoly M.D. hematologist and oncologist (spouse Kathleen), Bill Pipoly M.D. cardiologist (spouse, Valerie), and Daniel Pipoly M.D. pulmonologist and intensivist (spouse, Cynthia). Grandchildren include Lisa Book M.D. emergency medicine physician (spouse, Major Shannon Doyle fighter pilot), Zachary Book medical student, Nicholas Book entrepreneur and MBA student, Geoff Pipoly graduate student and future attorney, Gretchen Pipoly pre-med student, Matt Pipoly senior at Ohio State University and rugby player, Julie Pipoly honors high school senior and champion equestrian, George Pipoly honors high school sophomore and varsity football player, Joe Pipoly eighth grader and all star baseball player, Genevieve Pipoly third grader, and great-grandson, Connor Doyle. There will be a memorial Mass Friday, December 22 at 10 a.m. Holy Family Church, Poland, Ohio. Arrangements are by Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be given in Mr. Pipoly's name to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, 3450 W. Central Ave. #256, Toledo, OH 43606.
