Steven DeLisle Obituary

Deacon Steven Joseph DeLisle

"O God, come to my assistance; O Lord, make haste to help me".

Steven Joseph DeLisle died on May 8, 2019. He was born in Maumee, Ohio, son to wonderful parents, brother to three caring sisters, father to six adoring children, and husband to a humble, loving wife. He worked as an engineer, was a skilled craftsman, an intense board game player, and loved to build and work with his hands. Steven felt most fulfilled in his work as a Permanent Deacon in the Catholic Church - he worked passionately with the parishioners at Maumee St. Joseph's, the residents of Sunshine Community, and all others who sought peace and wisdom from his counsel. Steven lived piously and encountered all he met with a humble kindness. He spoke thoughtfully, truthfully, and directly, and had the most perfect sense of humor. According to his family, Steven was the funniest man they'd ever met with an unparalleled affinity for movie quotes. Steven took great joy in his family and was the happiest when his wife and all of his children were together. He was especially looking forward to the birth of his first grandchild. Heaven has gained a saint - St. Steven, pray for us.

Steven's love lives on in his wife Beth DeLisle; children Stepan (Katie), Hattie Pumphrey (Christopher), Clare, Ellyn (Micah Benza), Abram, and Mary Helen; his mother Maxine Schulte and sisters Susan Martinez, Debra Fahnestock (Dan), and Peggy Rauscher (Mike)

Reception of the Body will be held at 1:00 pm on Monday, May 13, 2019 at Saint Joseph Church, 104 W. Broadway, Maumee, Ohio; with Visitation continuing until a Vigil at 7:30 pm. Additional visitation will be held in the church at 10:00 am on Tuesday, May 14, 2019 with The Funeral Mass to follow at 11:00 am with Reverend Keith A. Stripe, Principal Celebrant and Deacon Joseph N. Malenfant, Homilist. Interment will follow in Saint Joseph Cemetery, Maumee, Ohio. Memorial Contributions may be made to the Sunshine Community or St. Joseph Building Fund. The Maison-Dardenne-Walker Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements. We are so saddened at the news of Steve's passing. For several years our family sat directly behind yours at St Joe's and we remember what a beautiful singing voice he had. We also recall his warm personality and smile.

Our sincere condolences to the entire DeLisle family.

I have a lot of fond memories of Steve and his sisters from when we were growing up on W Wayne St. all those years ago. What a fantastic childhood I had with the DeLisles in my neighborhood! Losing Steve is a huge loss. The world was a much better place with him in it!

Steve, thank you for being the calm, capable, guiding leader that you always were. But mostly, just for being a friend.
To Steve's family: thank you for sharing him with us.

I am grateful for the opportunity to have known Steve and to have complimented his sense of humor by making him smile and laugh each time I stopped by his office. Steve was not only a friend, he was a mentor and we both positively influenced each other while working together. I will miss Steve greatly and I know that part of him will always live on in me.

My family lived just a block away from Steve when we were kids. I would visit Steve and his sisters quite a few times in their home. We had a lot of fun in those days. Years later, after I moved to San Antonio, I would see Steve at St. Joseph's Catholic Church when I visited Maumee. I pray for Steve and his family. He will be dearly missed.

Secret Box Mystery Solved!
Growing up, Steve and I spent many fun hours using our imaginations going on adventures together. Some of that included playing detective and a small wooden box we referred to as the secret box. We mainly looked for clues outside and in basements, then put our evidence in the box.
Once again, someone we love so near to us has been taken away suddenly. Right now, we can't see how God's purposes are at work because of this, another mystery. There are so many people that are being touched by Steve's sudden death. Not only the people he lived and worked with, but also of his wife Beth, children Stepan, Hattie, Clare, Ellyn, Abe, Mary Helen, mother Maxine, sisters Sue, Deb, Peg as well as cousins, aunts and uncles. Just like when we used to skip rocks across the water, the impact moves out to a larger and larger circle. Then it occurred to me, that part of God's purposes may be to show clues that others need to see, that will point them to the best end of our final destination; eternal life with Jesus in heaven. Here are some of the clues from God's word:
1.Since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities- his eternal power and divine nature- have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse (Romans 1: 19-20).
2.This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus (Romans 3: 22-24).
3.For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith-and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God-not by works, so that no one can boast (Ephesians 2: 8-9).
4.How, then can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? And how can they preach unless they are sent?.....Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of Christ (Romans 10: 1417).
5.So, as the Holy Spirit says: Today if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion. But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called Today, so that none of you may be hardened by sin's deceitfulness (Hebrews 3:7-13).
6.We are therefore Christ's ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ's behalf: Be reconciled to God (2Corinthians 5: 20).
7.Neither this man nor his parents sinned' said Jesus, but this happened so that the work of God might be displayed in his life. As long as it is day, we must do the work of him who sent me' (John 8: 3-4).
Several times Steve and I had talked about others we knew who did not seem to have heard and acted upon this message, but we encouraged each other to continue to pray for them, knowing that whether the message was heard in their youth or in old age, the reward would be the same eternal life in heaven with Jesus and all the other saints we have and have not known personally.

I encourage all of us to use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God's grace in its various forms. If anyone speaks, he should do it as one speaking the very words of God. If anyone serves, he should do it with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ (1Peter 4: 10-11).
I encourage all to remember There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but the same God works all of them in all men (1Corinthians 12: 4-6).
I pray for others in the circles touched by this as Jesus prayed, My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you (John 17:20-21).
Lovingly,
Your earthly and heavenly sister,
Debie

In my mind, Steve will always be stirring apple butter around a campfire with the Schulte family. After grandpa passed, the torch was passed to Steve to fill jars. What big shoes he had to fill. When I think back though, I can't imagine anyone else doing it. He will be greatly missed.

Beth and family

We at the Beham family are shocked and saddened at the passing of Steve. He truly was a man of faith , a gentle human being with a great dry sense of humor. Most importantly he was a man of faith and family. God must have needed another saint in heaven, because Steve was truly a saint on earth. Just about one year ago Steve presided over my dad's prayer service at the wake. Who would have thought almost one year later Steve would be gone on earth from us. God's speed Steve you will be missed but never forgotten. To Beth and Steve's children and family, our hearts, thoughts and most importantly our prayers are with you.
