Captain Thomas Joseph Herold was born November 26, 1942, in Toledo, Ohio, to James and Alice (Persik) Herold. Thomas graduated from St. James Grade School, St. Francis de Sales High School, the University of Toledo (B.B.A. in General Business and Economics), and the Ohio State University (M.B.A. in General Business and Economics). He served as an altar boy at St. James Church and later trained other boys to be altar servers. Occasionally, he sang in the church choir. After completing his formal education, Tom entered active duty with the U.S. Army and served in the USA, Korea, Vietnam, and Germany. He was married for seven years to Mary Watson Herold of Fayetteville, North Carolina. They had no children.

After his military service, Tom worked in the USA for several years, eventually returning to Germany, where he lived for more than 22 years, most of them operating his own business as a tax preparer for United States citizens and small businesses. Of particular interest to Tom was spiritual development, meditation, quantum mechanics, and metaphysics.

Left to cherish his memory are his sister, Sister Mary Francein Herold, S.N.D.; his ex-wife, Mary; and cousins, George (Joanne) Bankertz, Joni Zechman, Barbara Garrett, Margaret Wierzbicki, Carol McNeel; other cousins, and good friends, Jeffree and Joy Slye-Nelson. Tom was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, James, Jr.

Tom's Life Celebration will begin Sunday January 14, 2024, from 1 pm until his funeral service begins at 3 pm in the Urbanski Funeral Home a Life Celebration Home, 5055 Secor Rd. Toledo, Ohio.

A private burial with full military honors will be at a later date with family and friends. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Sisters of Notre Dame or a charity of your choice.
