Thomas H. Tenney

Thomas H. Tenney passed away in his home in Ottawa Hills, Ohio, on Thursday, April 14, 2022. He was 83 years old.

Tom was the older son of Grace and Harold Tenney. He was born in Findlay, Ohio, November 14, 1938 and had one younger brother, Jim Tenney. The family moved to Ottawa Hills when Tom was very young. The Tenneys spent many summers at their cottage on Walloon Lake near Petoskey, Michigan. Tennis was an important activity for the family. Tom started playing when he was around eight, on the clay courts of the Toledo Tennis club. Tom played in junior tournaments and at Ottawa Hills High School. He and the family spent many spring vacations traveling to Florida for junior tournaments. Tom was runner up in the state championships as a senior in 1956. The summer after graduation he played at Elyria Ohio where he won the State of Ohio singles and doubles championships with his brother Jim.

Tom graduated from Ottawa Hills High School in 1956 and attended one semester on scholarship at Duke University. He graduated from the University of Toledo with a BS in engineering and physics in 1967 and a MS in physics in 1969. He has had a professional engineer license from 1974 to the present. During his career Tom had two main jobs, the first one was at the Medical College of Ohio, Anesthesiology Department Research, working for a doctor and his wife, a veterinarian and the department chairman. Tom worked there for eleven years. The second main job he had was for fifteen years as a U.S. Merchant Marine, Ocean Ships Radio Officer. He was on the Ocean four months at a time, flying to and from ships, from the Detroit Metro Airport. He worked for the Maritime Union, AMO,( American Maritime Officers} and traveled around the world, including the Pacific coast near Martinez California and Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean. Tom also worked for a short time as a substitute high school math teacher for the Toledo Public Schools.

Tom is predeceased by his parents; and brother. He is survived by two nieces, Michelle and Kim in California.

Tom was a member of Christ Presbyterian Church for many years and was a Deacon there.

The 1956 graduating class from Ottawa Hills High School fondly remembers Tom. We were most proud of his achievements in tennis along with his brother Jim. Just a nice guy who will be missed.
