Veronica Cottingham Obituary

Veronica Michelle Cottingham, twenty-seven, daughter of Frederic Oliver Cottingham and Constance Elizabeth (Dunham) Cottingham, born August 6, 1978, in Flint, MI, died on February 12, 2006. Veronica ministered to second and third grade First Church of God bible study students as she taught God's children His word. She taught them the "Fruits of the Spirit", which are love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, meekness, temperance, and faith, and her favorite Joyce Meyer quotation is, "Is your fruit being squeezed?" Veronica was a math tutor at the University of Toledo and St. John's Jesuit high school; she also tutored and mentored many other students in the Toledo area. Veronica is a beautiful, young, and gifted princess who demands that her family meet her expectations of grace, elegance, and beauty.
Veronica attended Blissfield Elementary and Middle Schools and graduated high school from Notre Dame Academy. She also graduated from the University of Michigan in the College of Engineering. Veronica was the first African American to be employed as a civil engineer for the city of Toledo's Engineering Services.
Veronica is missed by her sisters, Angela (Cottingham) Lee, Rebecca Cottingham, and Laura Cottingham; her brother-in-law, Reginald Lee; her grandparents, Duffy Dunham, Elizabeth Dunham, David Cottingham, and her grandmother, Marguriet Cottingham, who preceded her in death; her special girlfriends, Joy Wilkins, Lalonya Paige, Leslie Bouldes, Essie Ekaah, Gail Saldano, and a host of family and friends.
The Cottingham family would like to extend special thanks for their tremendous care to the following: The Medical University of Ohio, 4ABCD staff, Nate, Dorothy, Libby, Amanda, Angela, Terri, Bixby Hospital, Shane, Sherri and Corrine.
The Cottingham family will receive family and friends at the House of Day Funeral Service Chapel from 4-7 p.m. on Friday, February 17, 2006, and the funeral service has been scheduled for Saturday, February 18, 2006 at 10 a.m. at First Church of God, 3016 Collingwood Blvd., Toledo, OH.

To the Cottingham family,

I was so saddened to hear of Veronica's passing. I had the pleasure to serve as Veronica's academic advisor in chemical engineering at Michigan. She was such a lovely young woman, always positive, always smiling. I admired her persistence and positive spirit, and was so proud of her when she graduated. She made your day every time you saw her, and I will forever cherish warm memories of our times together. Know that you're in my thoughts.

To The Cottingham Family;

I had the pleasure of meeting Veronica through her big sis Angie (Rose Bud) at UM. When I found out about Veronica's passing via a UM Alum this past weekend, I was truly sadden. I could envision her smile and her bubbly demeanor as we ran into one another on campus. I loved talking to Veronica. She was a ray of sunshine that I shared many conversations with such as majoring in Chem E to switching majors to her work with the Reach-Out Mentoring Program. Veronica will truly be missed. I remembered seeing her take part in the UM Gospel Chorale performances that always uplifted me. To the Cottingham Family and Angie, my prayers are with you. Please treasure the good memories and remember that we will see her on the other side.

God Bless and Take Care!!

Dearest Ones,

Precious Princess Veronica. Her love for Jesus ever evident in her radiant smile and compassionate eyes. Veronica led our UM Reach Out Science Clubs for 4 years. She especially loved directing a program at Pastor Davis' Ypsilanti, MI Community Church of God. Veronica and her Reach Out UM leaders gave birth to our mentoring program that still grows today. She now knows the impact she made for the Lord in her everyday life while at the UM.....she gave me an angel coin to keep in my billfold to remember the Saints and angels that are ever near when we suffer for Christ and have hard times. I cherish this coin- moreover, I cherish my times with Veronica. How she taught me so much about faith, and "walking the talk." Thankfully, we will one day be with her again- for eternity!

Dear Family,

Each day with Veronica at UT was a day from heaven! Those who never knew Jesus before knowing Veronica, knew Him after spending time with her! As Christ told us, "They will know you are mine by the way you love others." We knew this of Veronica---we still do. What a bright and awesome angel she is!

She will be missed by all who were touched by her.

My deepest sympathies,

Laura Johnson

Dear Family,

We all loved Veronica when she worked with us tutoring for the Learning Enhancement Center at UT. She brought her Bible with her and I could tell she was a committed Chrstian girl. I was so happy for her when she got the job with the city of Toledo. What a wonderful girl and witness for her Lord. My thoughts and prayers go out to you all. Veronica was a vital and winsome human being and she made this world a better place.

To my extended family,

Veronica was a darling individual who always kept her trek of reaching God as her mission in life. Through this cause she was able to touch so many individuals during her walk with us on earth. To Mother Cottingham, Mr. Cottingham and the sisters, it is with the deepest sympathy I write you today. Veronica held an everlasting light with me and my family. She was a pivotal, inspirational, and charismatic individual whom I'm glad that God placed in my life through our past relationship. May our Awesome God hold your entire family on his broad sholders during your time of need. The Lord has something marvelous planned in all his activities. This was one of his acts. I will allways love and miss her, ever so deeply, and will continue to use her daily walk as a pattern to follow in my quest to see the Savior, as well.

Dear Rebecca:

So sorry to hear of your loss. Remember, God is now watching over her.

Yulanda McCarty-Harris

February 16, 2006

I am not surprised that Veronica's favorite saying is Joyce Meyer's quotation of "Is your fruit being squeezed?" Truly, truly she is the embodiment of all the fruits, and believe me she made sure that each were overflowing in abundance. (This is evident by all the testimonies written on this guest book."

I miss you, I miss you, and I will regret forever that I did not get to say good-bye. But I will see you again, my sister - my beautiful, African sister. For I am, too, saved by grace, and born of the Spirit.

It is not often that a woman of your character and spirit crosses by and you happened to cross my path working at the City of Toledo. I remember you coming by the Purchasing office dropping off the first bid book you had put together at the City. The book read, "For technical questions regarding the specifications of this project contact Veronica Cottingham, Engineer." Although, you were young in your profession you were not just an engineer in the making but a great and qualified engineer - a role model for many of our young sisters.

May you rest in peace my sister and may God continue to give your family strength and mercy through this time of need. I love you....and I will see you again.
