Virginia Mae (Becker) Walsh "Aunt Ginny"

Virginia Mae (Becker) Walsh, 92, a longtime resident of South Toledo, passed away early Monday morning, July 17, 2023, at Parkcliffe Memory Care, Toledo, Ohio. Virginia was born July 20, 1930, to Henry F. and Estella A. (Ahrendt) Becker. She attended Arlington School and Edward D. Libbey High School graduating in June 1949.

After high school, she became employed at Save Way Red & White Grocery Store, on Arlington Avenue, Toledo, where she later met her husband, Gerald P. Walsh, and became co-owner and operator of the grocery store for 26 years. Virginia later became a bank teller for 17 years retiring from Sky Bank in 1997. While working at the bank, she met many people. One person, in particular, was Gene R. Saevig, who became her loving companion for 27 years. Ginny and Gene were a beautiful couple that were devoted to each other. Through their time together, they attended many activities including local dances. They also took many cruises all over the world with their close friends, George and Helen Johnson.

Virginia was a longtime member of Bethel Lutheran Church, Toledo, where she was baptized and confirmed. Ginny was a member of both the Margaret Hunt and Maumee Senior Centers. She also served on the Libbey High School Alumni Reunion Committee.

Virginia is survived by nieces, Dianna (Dennis) Schroder and Kathy Wenz; nephew, Jeffery Wenz; grand nephews, Jack and James Wenz and their mother, Jill Sujkowski; Daniel (Dianne) Saevig, who was like a son; Susan Eckel, who was like a daughter; Danielle Saevig, who was like a granddaughter to her; cousin, Robert (Marilyn) Siefke; step-daughters, Barbara Dilly of Alaska and Rosemary (Bruce) Baron of Utah, along with many more cousins and close family friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother and sister-in-law, Donald and Patricia Becker; sister and brother-in-law, Dolores and Donald Wenz; loving companion, Gene R. Saevig; husband, Gerald P. Walsh; step-daughter, Mary Ellen Nimershiem; and step-son and step-daughter-in-law, Peter and Arlene Walsh.

Visitation will be held at Walter Funeral Home, 4653 Glendale Avenue, Toledo, Ohio, on Tuesday, July 25, 2023, from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. with funeral services on Wednesday, July 26, 2023, at 10:30 a.m. in the funeral home. Virginia will be laid to rest in Elliston Cemetery, Elliston, Ohio. In lieu of flowers, Virginia's wishes were for memorials to Bethel Lutheran Church, Toledo; Parkcliffe Memory Care, Toledo; or to a charity of the donor's choice.

I grew up going to Jerry's Red and White, and Ginny often ran the checkout. She was always nice to us kids, and yes, going to Jerry's was like going to the family pantry for everyone around there.
