Walter Achenbach Obituary

ACHENBACH
Walter B.
Walter B. Achenbach, formerly of Toledo, Ohio passed away peacefully at his home in Naples, Florida on April 6, 2016, surrounded by family. Walter is survived by his wife, Jean Rhoads Achenbach; three sons, Bruce Achenbach, Naples, Florida; Brian Achenbach and his wife, Younghie, of Claremont, California; Jay Achenbach and his wife, Julie, of Toledo, Ohio; and Jay's children, Kyler and Kendra Achenbach.
Curly, as he was known to friends and colleagues, was born and grew up in rural Taylorville, Illinois. He graduated from the University of Illinois. Following his WWII service in the United Sates Army, his professional career began with Owens-Illinois and spanned 47 years. He retired in 1985 as O-I Corporate Vice President and General Manager of the Libbey Glass Division. His 17 years as General Manager at Libbey were the highlight of his long and fulfilling career. After retiring from Libbey, he took an assignment as Managing Director of the Ravenhead Glass Company in England. He and his wife, Jean enjoyed living in London and Southport until fully retiring in 1987.
Curly and Jean enjoyed a healthy and active retirement in Sapphire, North Carolina and Naples, Florida. They were longtime residents and active members of the Wyndemere Country Club in Naples, Florida for over 29 years.
Per his wishes, there will be a small service limited to family when his ashes are placed in the family plot in Taylorville, Illinois. This service will celebrate his close to 95 years of a long, healthy and happy life, especially the 70 years of marriage to his beloved wife, Jean.
There will be no local
funeral service other than the small family service yet to be scheduled in Taylorville, Illinois. The family requests no flowers or contributions. For online condolences, please visit

I just today became aware of Curly's death. Curly was a legend at Burlingame Country Club in Sapphire, NC, where my husband and I played many games of tennis and golf with he and Jean. They were a lovely couple and Curly will be missed. Our condolences to his family.

While Curley was with Libbey I worked in sales in Philly, Roch NY, and Cinci,OH. And I had so much fun. There were many great days and achievement under his guidance. Working at Libbey was the very best part of my life. Curley helped make it so. I remember being at a NPD meeting and Curley turned over a Greeting card and said, "Hallmark, when you care to steal the very best."
I loved Curley.

Heartfelt sympathy goes out to the family and friends during this difficult time. I hope that the promise found at 1 Thessalonians 4:14 will bring you comfort. Knowing that there is a future for the ones we have lost in death can be reassuring.

Jean, Jay, Bruce and Brian - My condolences to you all. Curly and Jean were fond friends and golfing pals, of my late in-laws, John F. and Ruth Landwehr, and were in a golf potluck group that vacationed together every year in warm climates. Curly was known as the life of the party, with his charming good humor and quick wit. My late husband, John T. and I and our children always enjoyed Curly's tales!
Sincerely and with heartfelt sympathy, Jan Landwehr
