William Elton Obituary

ELTON William (Bill) William (Bill) Elton, 83, of Sylvania, OH, passed away peacefully May 7, 2007, at home after an extended illness. He was employed by Libby Owens Ford for 32 years, as Manager of Technical Services in the Aircraft and Industrial Glass Division, retiring in 1983. Bill was born in Delta, Ohio to Otho and Celia (Demaline) Elton. He moved to Swanton in the 5th grade, and was class president his sophomore year. He lettered in basketball and football his senior year; prior to that he was student manager for both teams. Bill worked for Ford in Dearborn, Michigan until he enlisted in the Army Air Corp in 1941, and attended Officers' School at Yale University where he achieved the rank of Second Lieutenant as a gunnery officer. After his discharge in 1946, he enrolled at Bowling Green State University where he earned his BS Degree in Chemical Engineering. After a year at General Mills, he went to work at LOF as a research chemist, later becoming a sales engineer for their glass division. While at LOF, Bill was credited with numerous patents for manufacturing safety glass for airplanes, tanks and automobiles. Bill was a volunteer fireman for the Maumee Volunteer Fire Department for 16 years, rising to the rank of Lieutenant on the Emergency Squad. He was a member of the Maumee Elks Lodge #1850 for 45 years, and was named their first Elk Of The Year in 1965. He currently is a member of the Toledo Elks Lodge #53. Bill was an avid fisherman throughout his life, and also enjoyed golf and racquetball. Surviving are his wife, Ellen; daughter, Caroline Alderman of Hilton Head, SC; sons, Mike (Martha) of Carrollton, TX, John (Pam) of Perrysburg, and Tom (Judy) of Maumee; grandchildren, Ashley and Kyle Alderman, Nicole, Brad, and Luke Elton, and brother, Paul (Barbara) Elton of Swanton. Also surviving are step-children, Scott Clark of Sarasota, FL, Sandra Laytart of Luttrell, TN, and Cheryl (Mark) Schwartz of Chattanooga, TN, six step grandchildren and 18 step great-grandchildren. The family would like to thank Hospice for their tremendous help and loving care in assisting with Bill at home. Those wishing to give memorials are asked to consider Hospice of Northwest Ohio. Visitation will be held at Reeb Funeral Home 5712 N. Main Street, Sylvania, from 4 - 9 p.m. Thursday May 10th, where an Elks Service will be performed at 7 p.m. A Memorial Service will be performed Friday May 11th at 1 p.m. at the Reeb Funeral Home.
