William Jones Obituary

William L. Jones, Sr.

6/28/1929 - 6/6/2021

William L. Jones, Sr. passed away on June 6, 2021 surrounded by family in his Sylvania home, 3 weeks shy of his 92nd birthday.

Bill was born June 28, 1929 in Indianapolis, Indiana, the only child of Otis and Chelsea Jones. Bill earned rank of Eagle Scout June 3, 1946. He also was presented the Ad Altari Dei emblem from the National Catholic Committee on Scouting. Bill graduated from Cathedral High School in Indianapolis, Indiana in 1947 and from Purdue University with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering in 1952. He began his career with Union Carbide in 1952 until 1972, when he accepted a job with Schenectady Chemicals, where he worked until his retirement in 1999. His career focus was in the tire and brake lining industry and was a long time member of the Akron Rubber Group.

Bill married Mary Helen Harrington on October 11, 1952. They dated 4 years while he was attending college and then enjoyed a wonderful and loving union for 68 years until his death. They raised 6 children throughout their moves to Cleveland, Akron and finally Sylvania, Ohio on September 1, 1964.

Bill was a 55 year member of Highland Meadows, serving on The Board of Govenors in 1983, 1984, and 1985. Also, he was a long time parishioner of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Sylvania and for about 50 years was an usher at 9:oo a.m. Mass. Bill engineered his homemade snowmobile in the late 1960's, pulling his and the neighborhood children around the block. Oddly enough, snowmobiling became his second loved sport behind golf in 1987. He also loved his weekends in the summer at Long Lake in Reading, MI.

Bill's greatest, unsurpassed love was that for his family. Surviving him is his loving wife, Mary Helen; his children, William Jr. (Joyce), Tim (Lori), Ann Stockman (Mel), Mike (Linda), Vicky Wagner (Kevin), and Daniel (Sandra); 8 grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchildren.

I learned yesterday of Bill's passing. I worked with him for nearly his entire time at Schenectady Chemicals/International and found him a joy to work with. My sympathy to the family. He often talked of you and was proud of all of you.

As a fellow Eagle Scout, Ad Altari Dei award winner and Highland Meadows member, Mr Jones was a mentor and friend on and off the golf course. He will be missed by his family and friends.
