William Prueter Obituary

William Carl Prueter

William Carl Prueter, born July 6, 1934, to William and Martha (Noffke) Prueter, in Toledo, OH, fell asleep in the Lord on Tuesday, June 26, 2018.

Bill graduated from the former DeVilbiss High School before enlisting in the United States Naval Reserves. He served both inactive and active duty until he was honorably discharged due to injury. Bill worked for several companies in Toledo including two floral shops before working for himself as an interior painter and wallpaperer.

He married Marjorie (Jonas) in 1965, who survives along with daughters Lori (Brad) LaBarre, Minneapolis, MN, and Amy (Christopher) Rowe, Toledo, OH; grandchildren, Meghan and Nicholas Rowe, and John, Sarah and Matthew LaBarre; sister, Lois (Richard) Balge, Thiensville, WI; and brother Ted, Grand Rapids, MI; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Bill was an active member of Hope Lutheran Church and sang in its choir for many years. He loved music and met Marjorie when they both sang with the Toledo Choral Society. He was a craftsman, often keeping his hands busy with making floral arrangements or wreaths, and shared his gift with many.

Bill loved deeply and never failed to make sure those around him knew he loved them, to thank them for a kindness or to remind them to "be good."

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m., Sunday, July 1, at Foth-Dorfmeyer Mortuary, 3815 W. Sylvania Ave. A memorial service will be at noon, Monday, July 2, at Ward Pavilion, Wildwood Metropark, 4830 W. Central Ave. Burial will be private.

Bill always appreciated the beauty of flowers and believed flowers are for the living. In lieu of flowers, tributes in Bill's name may be made to the Feed Your Neighbor Ministry at Salem Lutheran (c/o Cathy St. Claire, N. Huron, Toledo, OH 43604), Assistance Dogs for Achieving Independence (5605 Monroe St., Sylvania, OH 43560) or Hospice of Northwest Ohio. Online condolences may be left at

Uncle Bill was a strong and funny man. He suffered a lot but had a smile that would warm your heart. His commitment to family starting as a young man taking care of Grandma after Grandpa's death to his devotion to Aunt Margie, Lori and Amy remind me of his brother, my father Ted. While he didn't speak much of his time in the service, I honor that time and his physical sacrifice. To him I dedicate the Navy Hymn Eternal Father. Thanks for all the treasured memories of family gatherings and stories. We love and will miss you. My father, your brother joins me in committing you to our Risen Savior, Jesus.
