James Hess Obituary

James Elden (Sorrel) Hess passed away at Sunshine Terrace in Logan, Utah, on the morning of July 17, 2025. Jim was a devoted horseman, an active Latter-day Saint, a caregiver to his family, and a man who served his country with honor.

He was born on December 2, 1934, in Garland, Utah, to Emery Hess and Melba Thompson, and was raised in Fielding, Utah.

Jim's love for horses began as a young child, sparked by a suggestion from his Grandpa Thompson to get the young boy a pony. He bought, broke, and bred horses—always seeking the fastest and finest he could find. He knew all the bloodlines of the horses in his area and many others across the United States. When his sons were young, he ran cutter horses and flat track races, proudly winning some races and trophies along the way. He also raised sheep and sought out champion breeding stock so his sons could show prize lambs in 4-H and FFA.

Jim was an active member of the Plymouth Roping Club and the Box Elder County Posse. His greatest joy was riding horses in the hills and taking part in cattle drives. He worked with Doug Roche on his ranch and later with Jeff Roche on the J6 Ranch.

He was a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in many callings over the years, including Sunday School counselor, secretary, and teacher. He worked with the Scouts, served as priesthood secretary, and participated in both ward and stake committees.

Jim attended school, seminary, and high school in Garland, Utah, graduating from Bear River High School. He attended Utah State University for one year before enlisting in the U.S. Army.

He served for three years in France and Germany. While stationed in France, he received word that his father was dying and was able to return home just in time to be with him during his last days. Jim completed the remainder of his service at Dugway Proving Ground.

On June 26, 1959, Jim married Tessa Marie Hoopes in Benson, Utah. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Logan Temple on April 3, 1964. Together, they raised their three sons and daughter in Fielding, Utah. Jim passed on his love of horses to his children and grandchildren, creating cherished memories on horseback and in the hills.

He farmed part-time and worked at Thiokol for 10 years before beginning a 31-year career at Hill Air Force Base.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Emery and Melba Hess; his beloved wife, Tess Hess; his daughter, Elon Marie Hess; and his grandson, Hutchinson Elden Hess.

He is survived by his brothers, Larry (Karen) Hess and NorVell (Edna) Hess; his sons, Tony (Lisa), San (Pam), and Todd; eight grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, at Noon with a viewing held prior from 10-11:30 A.M. All services will be held at the Fielding Stake Center (4375 W 15600 N- Garland). Interment will follow at the Fielding Cemetery. Online condolences and the link to the livestream of the service can be found at www.ruddfuneralhome.com.

The family would like to thank the caregivers and staff at Sunshine Terrace for their dedication and the compassionate care they provided to Jim and our family over the years. Jim was known for his signature coyote calls—he would use them when he needed help, and sometimes the staff would call back in kind.
